Tribes 1.

Hardest multiplayer FPS there is to master, but you feel awesome once you do.

Jetpacks and speed put that game a level above most others.

Anyways, my "elitist" game would be The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. Most people rag on this game for being only 3 days long (not gameplay, but the game is supposed to literally take place across 3 days). It was the first game I ever played from the series, and it is still my absolute favorite one ever.

YES!  THANK YOU!  finally, someone who appreciates Majoras Mask.   i happened to like this more than ocarina of time.  out of all the times i've played each, i've always just felt that majora's mask was more unique than ocarina.  I also loved the darker overall atmosphere of the story (the moons evil face always watching you)  and even though i dont usually like games that are timed, i felt perfectly comfortable with majora's mask.  Having to figure out which quests to do for which people at which time was a part that made it very fun for me, as everything had a consequence with everything else.

Enough of the fanboy rant though, i liked crackdown a lot, even though it didn't get great reviews.  and the reviews werent bad either, but i just loved this game so much.  I dont plan on giving this game up anytime soon even though i have already beat it ( except maybe for crackdown 2) Wink

I agree wholeheartedly.  I loved the the touching story behind each character you obtained a mask from and I just loved Fierce Diety Link.  I actually preferred Majora's Mask over Ocarina of time. I don't know why it never got as much love as OoT.

Decrypded:
Not sure if you would consider it to be in the category, but Braid would be my choice. Beautiful, thought intensive and unique. It might not fit the "elitist" term because it did end up selling a lot.
I also agree with Braid. I absolutely loved the artwork, the puzzles, and the story. I suppose you could call it elitest considering some people were complaining about it costing $15. However, I consider it well worth it.

I suppose my elitest game would be Amplitude. It was a great rhythm game that predated guitar hero and was really fun to play.

X-COM and X-COM: Terror From the Deep.

Sure, there have been other turn-based strategy games... but not really.  The first two X-COM games are the only turn-based games that matter, now and forever.

Also, it's a complete shame that BioShock is less interesting (although much prettier) than the original System Shock.

Cold Winter. To me, this was the absolute pinacle of FPSs, and no one gave a crap. I have never played one before or since that close, and I've played a lot of FPSs. Exceptional story, great gameplay, decent graphics for the limitations of the system it was on. I did manage to turn a friend of mine on to it who pretty much agrees with me. This is truely the best, most passed over game ever, IMO. Not the best game ever, but certainly the best that basically no one ever played.

Go play Silent Storm and Fallout Tactics. X-com was certainly a benchmark though. I played through, and still have, the PS1 version with the friggin mouse. :) Never could get into the second one though, for some reason.

I'll go with Undertow. It was by and large an extremely well-reviewed title, but hated by most of the non-journalist gaming community. A few things could have been changed to avoid this (i.e. make the "zoom" feature more accessible/well known), but it's an amazing dual stick shooter/team-based strategy game when you have two teams filled with communicating players.

I would have to say Portal. I know it is a popular game but no one I know likes it or has played it. I feel alone and need comfort. Maybe I have some cake somewhere...

My personal favorite part of Majora's Mask wasn't the main storyline (which was pretty good) but all of the side quests you could do. I personally tried to finish as many side quests as I possibly could before moving on to the next part of the main quest (usually a dungeon), and the fact that each one was based on a specific time you had to do it at (which integrated the 3 days concept perfectly) made me try to keep to a very strict and speedy schedule (with help from the inverted song of time and double song of time, of course). The other great feature was the masks that actually gave you a specific power (granted, some of them weren't all that useful except for a handful of times). Each one seemed to be link to obtaining an important item like a heartpiece or, if I remember correctly, an event item or another mask. One of the main reasons I didn't like Ocarina of Time was because the few masks (3, I think) they had did nothing (except the Mask of Truth, which wasn't very useful anyways). I also think the dark overtone of the game made you care a bit about the NPCs because you knew that they were going to be destroyed if you didn't help rewrite time. If you think about it, doing one quest, whether the main quest or the side quest, meant that you doomed the other quests from happening. The monkey from the first dungeon was going to get barbecued while you were off trying to bring the spring to Snowpoint Mountain, or while you were trying to save Anju's and Keifi (sp) marriage.
