mietha:Being as most of the best PS2 games are RPGs, and there are no RPGs on your list..
He did list Disgaea
No BGDA I and II, Summoner, Shadowhearts, Persona etc... tho. I really can't see SOCOM 3 or 007 EoN being best 25 anything tho

When you say Summoner, are you talking about the THQ games of 2000 and 2002 or the Atlus games Devil Summoner and its sequel which I couldn't get a copy of without giving up a kidney?
writinguy:I think the fact that a) I didn't play a lot of rpgs over the past 4 years or so

Summoner 1 and 2, not that "Devil Summoner" junk. S1 and S2 are made by Volition, who did Red Faction and Saint's Row
Best post about this list from elsewhere so far.
why the fudge was Urban Chaos: Riot Response #10 and Katamari Damacy #2? How have you not played any of the obvious games that should be on a PS2 Top Anything List?
Classic.
And Hexpane, I'll do a little more research into those games... I know I've seen mini ads for them on the backs of some of my manuals (like the aforementioned Red Faction I believe).

There have been a lot of previous posts here about Summoner and Summoner 2. Basically Summoner 1 is a lot like KOTOR only not as pretty and has some Vagrant story elements.
Western RPG, party based, real time w/ pause + chain timing. One of my fav PS2 games.
Summoner 2 I initially did not like because they made the party 3 instead of 4, and removed summons and replaced it w/ Morphs. The combat also changed from RTWP to action/real time. in the end this made the game very easy to exploit w/ "unblockable" attacks. But I ended up loving the game the more I played it just because there were so many items and locations. The Real Time ACtion combat actually became pretty fun once you leveled up a bit.
So it isn't all menus and waiting and such. That does indeed sound intriguing, as all that menu stuff is what originally drove me away from RPGs (because I played those games for the story lines and when narrative started spreading out to genres with play dynamics I liked better, well, I sort of backed away from Square, Enix and their brethren in the industry).

Yeah, nothing like JRPGs at all. But unless you've played Baldur's Gate I or II or NWN or something similar on the PC I would caution non RPG players from diving in.
Summoner 1 is one of those slow build games like KOTOR< you start out a scrub and it takes 3-4 hours before your party get's built up and you have good skills.
And it's an old game, 2001ish so the graphics might offend some. There are menus, but the combat is not menu based like JRPGs, just inventory, maps, quests etc..
I was definitely not a fan of Summoner 2, but Summoner 1 and Time Splitters were two of the best launch-ish games for the generation. It had a slow begining, but once you get accustomed to the fighting style... it's very enjoyable. Though, that was my personal take on it when the ps2 first came out, my personal opinion will have probably eroded should I go back through it today. Even then, it was a bit of a niche title that not everybody enjoyed.
While I don't agree with your assessment of "Top 25" from my personal viewpoint.. or even from a critical standpoint for a few of those (as you linked metacritic of course), I can definitely see that you have a "type" of game.
Personally, I would have tossed Okami, DMC1, God of War (1/2), Klonoa 2, FFX, ICO + Shadow of the Collosus, DQ8, Kingdom Hearts 1, Silent Hill 2, Persona 3, Beyond Good and Evil, Psychonauts, THPS3, Ratchet and Clank Up Your Arsenal, Time Splitters, and Pro Evo Soccer, Burnout 3, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on my own top 25
Katamari, Mercs, GTA 3 (LC + SA were just more of the same), RE4, and MGS2 would have also made my list,
Soul Calibur 2 would have made my list if it had proper online capabilities, but since it didnt... plus I enjoyed the bonus character from the NGC version much better... Outside of that and MVC2, I really didn't enjoy many of the other fighting games.
This may sound weird to you, aside from 4 titles you listed (Klonoa 2, FF X, Tony Hawk 3 and MvsC 2), I own every title you mentioned.
As I have said earlier, I wasn't particularly taken by God of War, Beyond Good and Evil was enjoyable, but I think its reputation makes it out to be a better game than it is, so I was slightly disappointed by it, I played KH/DQ VIII to a certain point and then quit, and Shadow of the Colossus (and by extension ICO) didn't tickle my fancy. And I know that the Tony Hawk games don't appeal to me, as I've played previous entries in the series, and I could take them or leave them (and yet the SSX games do appeal to me, figure that one out).
But I can see where you are coming from with your list.
My all time favourite games in NO order is the MGS4 for its storyline (the whole story from all the MGS not just mgs4 alone because without the other mgs the story in mgs4 would be confusing), Jak2, Jak3, Gears of war, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone2, NHL 10, God Of War 1 (still need to try to get God of war 2 to get ready for 3), and oblivion. I am about to try out Uncharted 1 and then later buy Uncharted 2. I'm pretty confident that those two games will be on my favourites as well.

Nice list of PS2 games. I wish MY PS2 was forwards compatible.
He was just listing his favorite games in general, so its cool. :)
Yeah I was just kidding, geez...
