If playing online is important to you... i would say xbox 360.  The xbox live network is more popular than psn.  They are both great systems in my opinion.  It really just depends.  Which set of games do you think you would like more?  The playstation 3 is a blueray player, and thats a plus.  I would do some research on each system though to see what you think would suit you more.  Also, regardless of which system you get, if you like rpgs, i would highly recommend Oblivion.  Assassins creed is a good cheap game as well.

I'm not a big online guy any more. I have a PS3 and it suits me fine. However, Xbox Live is probably way better. I have a PS3 and I like it's original games so I think you should base it on how many games you want from each system.

What systems do your friends have? That would be a factor if you plan on playing online a lot.

I can't speak for PSN but Xbox Live is very good and easy to use. It sucks having to pay money to get the best features, so if you're cheap PS3 might be the better choice.

PS3 also has Blu-Ray and the hardware is considered to be more reliable.

Since 90% of the games on both systems are the same, another factor would be which system you think has a better lineup of exclusive games that you'd really like to play. I'd say the PS3 lineup of exclusives and upcoming exclusives is better than what the 360 has.

My conclusion? Get a Wii. Wink

Look at this about games.  This seemed pretty helpful to me

For me, online makes the system. Based on most of your needs, I'd pick the PS3, but if online is as important to you as it is to me (ie if #1 is weighted more heavily than the rest), I'd pick the 360.

Severe lag issues on PS3/PSN is not true.  I'll admit most games on XBL have a better party system for getting together with your friends.  Some of the party systems on PS3 are unintuitive or frustrating.  They typically work but don't get high marks for ease of use.  The 360 offers cross-game chat which is awesome if you want to play a game and talk to a friend who's playing a different game - or simply want a private chat away from other players.

Multiplatform games that appear on both platforms are typically hosted the same way (Peer to peer or server-based) so the online experience is close to identical.  Outside of being dropped slightly more from games on CoD4 for PS3, I can't tell much of a difference between playing on a PS3 or a 360.

This is the crux of the problem and truely a decision for each individual gamer.   Some prefer the 360 exclusive games, some prefer the PS3 exclusives.  The majority of multiplatform games made up to mid-2008 preformed better on 360 than PS3.  Multiplatform games since then have performed near identically on both consoles.  Burnout Paradise plays the same across both consoles - if there are significant differences, I haven't seen any.

True.  The Pro is also being phased out from what i'm aware.  I'd also factor the $40-$50 for a year of XBL into that as well.  If you're looking to game off a wi-fi connection, that will cost you extra on the 360 side of things as well.

Sux.  If you have in the back of your head that PS3 may offer backward compatability for PS2 games in the future, I wouldn't count on it.  Any PS1 games you have WILL work on a PS3 though.

Both systems have their merits.  If I were you, i'd look over which games you are most interested in as well as your budget for getting a new console.  Really no right or wrong answer, it's up to you as far as which path you decide to walk down.

You really can't go wrong either way.  That being said, I preferred the PS3.

I don't play on-line much but when I do I don't have any lag issues.  I had a considerably large library of PS1 & PS2 games and chose to follow through with the all the franchises that I loved including MGS & God of War.   There are some great exluusives on both systems; i think the PS3 exclusives are more geared towards single player advetures (MGS, Uncharted, Infamous) even though they do have online features whereas the XBOX has a more developed online community.

The PS3 has Blu-ray capabilities if you are interested in high def movies, and its very easy to upgrade the hard drive.  Also, PSN is free but not as robust as XBOX Live. The XBOX has had a history of performance issues but no system is perfect.  You expect your products to last and you may have issues with it either way. It all depends on how you take care of your system.  Customer service / support for each system is on par.

In the end, it's the games that matter.  These are game systems. Choose depending on your preference of gaming experience keeping in mind that no matter which you choose you will lose out on the exclusives of the other (since you are choosing and not purchasing both).  I know I am missing out on some great XBOX games but I have plenty of PS3 games to have fun with.

If you are interested in a BC PS3, retailers like Gamestop may have them available (That's how I acquired my BC 80GB model).

Here are all the problems about ps3 all compiled into one post. First of all blu ray plays really really slow so parts of the game will be downloaded onto the harddrive so that the lazer doesn't have to travel so much. Second the less heard of yet just as comon flashing red light is the same as rrod and they happen both about the same. Lastly the ps3 gets way hotter than the 360. All the problems with xbox 360 rrod thats it.
