Maybe i'm in the minority here, but the redskins are a private club in a private league.  as are hooters and pink taco are private establishments.  these groups have the same freedom of speech as we all do and people can show their support (or disgust) with their wallets and let the market decide if a name change is preferable.  Since they are engaged in interstate commerce, they follow the civil rights act, but nothing about having a racially insensitive name is covered.

But more importantly, their purpose is not designed around a racist activity, ie, they are not a hate group discriminating against a legally protected class or exercising hate crimes against said class.  There was nothing illegal with the black panthers or kkk until they started committing crimes.

They won't be forced to change their name imo.

I'm pretty sure the skins though have tax money towards the stadium and tax breaks somewhere in there.

The entire NFL has a special exemption from congress regarding anti-trust laws.  Simply because congress are a bunch of celebrity marks.   So yeah this idea that the NFL is private and has no one to answer to is a bit off.

NFL answers to congress, and congress answers to the people.  Sadly most people don't understand the difference between blatant racism and "political correctness" .    PC was an early 90s political fad that has pretty much died.    People love to harken back to that phrase anytime anything racist is criticized.    But racism existed long before the PC fad, and the PC fad was short lived.   Racism lives on, still going strong.

Just go on Youtube, hundreds of thousands of christian gun nuts calling people the N-word in video comments. Racism is alive, strong and has millions of closet backers in the USA.

Or look at Craigslist, people spamming those boards w/ "monkey" photoshops and such.  It's a constant stream of racist postings from an extremely motivated and energetic base.

It has nothing to do with "offensive' or "free speech".   It's quite simple.  "Redskins" is racist slang that was used to disparage native americans.   It's no different than "coon" or "darkie" other than many people don't "agree" that it's racist simply because they don't think too hard about it.

If the Dallas cowboys were called the "White Trash Rednecks" instead, we'd all have a laugh and consider it silly.   That's because white people are the dominant power in the USA, it's impossible to have racism against whites when they are the dominant power.  but if it was called the "Dallas Slant Eyed Japs"  it would be easier for people to understand why it's racist.

I am not "personally offended" by the term "redskins" .   I'm not native american.   However I can recognize the obvious racist history of that term, and how racist terms like that are clearly un-american in spirit even if the reality of our history is built on racism.  We can at the very least recognize mistakes and atrocities, we should be able to admit "oh yeah, that is pretty lame/racist" and change.

The excuse of "it's been like that for a long time, it's tradition" is pretty lame and the same excuse they used for keeping blacks on the back of the bus

At the end of the day, the main argument for keeping the name 'Redskins' in place is "it's an expensive hassle to change." All true arguments stem back to that motive.

As for the gypped example, that's one of my pet peeves, and I know I've commented on it here before.  When people say they were jipped, or gipped, it's just annoying to me.  I know they don't know what their saying could be offensive, and don't understand the history of it, or they wouldn't be spelling it wrong.  It just annoys me when people use a term they don't really understand, as evidenced by their misspelling.

You're trying to have your cake and eat it too.

I'm really not.  All I'm saying is if you are going to use a phrase, or term, know the meaning, both practical, and historical, of it.  If someone were to use the term redskin with hatred, that's one thing.  But it's not, in this case.  Saying it would be like a team being called the North Carolina N-words is crazy.  People, unfortunately, still use that word the world over, to inflict harm and demean others.  That's not the case with redskin.

Anyways, the point I was making is that just because the word's meaning has evolved over time, doesn't mean people shouldn't understand the original significance of it.  Once they do, they can make up their own minds as to if it's a word they want to use, or not.  It is wonderful to keep the lessons of the past in mind, something that can be accomplished by being knowledgeable of the original connotations of these words, but if they are no longer used in a hateful  way, why must people still complain.  Redskin is no longer a hateful term, due in part I'd imagine, to it's saturation in society, due to a sports team.  Congratulations.  Mission accomplished.

Unless you aim to go back to europe and give back everything, don't even bother with a freaking team's name.  I wouldn't be in support of that, either.  What happened is past.  Done and over with.  Nothing the 'white man' did to any other races was committed against those around whining about it today.  The idea of reparations to any group of people in america in this day and age is ridiculous.

When I lived in Georgia, I recall people complaining about the Braves.  That's not offensive in the least, and if anything, is a name that people of that heritage can take pride in.  However, for the simple fact that the team's logo was a native american, and is a tomahawk, people just want to find something to bitch about.
