That would be nice.  It looks like I'm buying an 80 GB this week and trading in/selling my 40GB, but what does everyone do with these extra USB ports?  I've only ever used one.

Who care really, it still does the same thing.  It's a markeiting thing.   It's no diffeerent why they change the way a car model looks each year,  it's the same care it just looks different.  I like my PHAT PS3 all that matters is that it works!  Right?

I am happy with my fat PS3 metal gear solid 4 80gb bundle. i have 4 usb ports, back/comp, memory card slots, wifi, soft touch power and eject.  smooth shiny exterior. 

the ps3 slim, 2 usb's, no memory card slots, push button power (very child friendly) , always on stand by, cheap plastic case, but not a dust magnet, whoopie... yes this does have wifi but a rather dumbed down version of a superior console. i feel sad they are phasing out the old fatties and stocking only this cheap system.  makes me want to hoard a new sealed fatty system for a rainy day.

Dude don't worry the fat ps3 is where it's at. It is a classy piece of hardware.   The slim is for those that nay-sayed and held back, just watch how the ps3 will blow up.  I have both ps3 and 360. love em both. no fan boyism here, just supporting an old dog.  aaaaarrrrrrrr!

So if Sony reduced cost by 70%, why don't they pass that on tho the consumer?  Price drops happen when the games you sell make up for the loss in profit you get from making no money on the console.  But if you aren't selling enough games, then you need to make a cheaper system sooner to recoup those lost profits.  One example: http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/19/activision-threatens-to-drop-sony-if-sony-doesnt-drop-ps3-and-p/

I agree Sony has been making smaller consoles since the release of the PSone. The slim versions are usually slipped into the market two or three years after that console generations release, right before the end of a consoles term. BUT. For the first time,with the PS3, sony has actually slimmed down what the console can do as well.

The original PS3 was mammoth because of everything that was inside. So ther was reason for it's massive size. Now that SONY has eliminated everything that made the PS3 different, other than Blu Ray, theres nothing extra in the console. No media card readers, no seperate boards, and backward compatibilty is neigh*. So it was kind of pointless to keep making a console that large. It was empty.

*Downloaded PSone and 2 game content from the Playstation Store is still backward compatible. Discs are not. There is no emulator present that I know of.

You act as if this is the only manner in which any company would ever consider a price drop. Just because one company holds that strategy doesn't mean all companies are using the same strategy. You assume too much, and you don't offer any real evidence for it.

Before Sony reduced costs, they were paying more to make the consoles than they were making in sales of the consoles. Now that they have reduced the costs of making the console by 70%, just enough to make a nice profit off of the sale of the systems and drop the sale price by enough that they appease those certain game developers, they are recouping everything they lost previously not only in sale of video games, but also in sale of systems. This is the fastest way to make up for money and/or time lost.

What do you mean "why don't they pass that on to the consumer"? They already are. They dropped the price. When the 360 has a blu-ray drive, you might be able to make some kind of point about them dropping the price, but currently the choice for consumers is now:

$300 for a DVD based device

or

$300 for a Blu-ray based device

It's a fairly sound business strategy that is already bringing in a lot more sales than before. However, you act as if the price hasn't dropped enough. You'd prefer Sony wasn't making any money off of their console sales at all? Again, doing so isn't STANDARD BUSINESS POLICY for ANY company, let alone M$, Nintendo, or Sony -- it's just a tactic used often in the very beginning of a new console generation to establish the console and get contracts with publishers.

Being that Sony has already expressed their plans ad nauseum for the PS3 to be a "10 year system", it makes perfect sense that they would wait until now to release this. Everything about the release of the PS3 slim makes sense and fits with their professed business strategies.
