Having just -250'ed a bootleg anime DVD set I received, I thought it'd be a good idea to inform everyone considering trading anime DVDs of a couple of things:

- A lot of anime dvds you can pick up new from mom and pop video game and toy stores are, in fact, bootleg.  Make sure to compare the UPC on the box to the one in the Muse database before putting it up for offer on Goozex.

- Ditto eBay and Amazon Marketplace.  Bootleg anime runs rampant here.

- The following companies are known bootleggers: "Animation Video," "Anime Cartoon/Manga International" (not to be confused with Manga Entertainment), "Fx" and "Anime Studio."  If the DVD set you have has any of these company logos on the spine or where the actual company logo (Viz, Funimation, etc) should be, IT IS A BOOTLEG.

Here is a FAQ on bootleg anime: http://www.jazzmess.com/merch/bootlegfaq.html

Thanks, and be careful, fellow Goozexers!

So....did you still keep it or throw it in the trash? Wink

Last time I had bootleg anime that I acquired prior to Goozex, I gave it away free at a meet-up.

I have a family member (by marriage) who owns bootleg X-Men DVDs. I've considered reporting him to the appropriate authorities.

Alright, once again the seller responds and proceeds to insult me again.  here is the conversation from my last response to what I posted before, then his newest response and my final response to him.

My response as a buyer -

Are you not reading what I wrote. This is a Chinese knockoff of the anime dvd. This isn't some obscure version, it is an illegal bootleg. Look at the cover that Goozex provides for the title, that is the one that should have been provided. It was released by ADV Films in the U.S., not some Taiwanese dvd2001 shop which is clearly printed on the DVD and the cover art. You should be the one who pays attention to the movies they buy and make sure you have official products before sending off bootlegs.

If you input the UPC on the back of the case, you would have also realized it was not in the database, so that should have been your first hint. Negative stands. Was going to hope we could work out a cancellation and you could pay to ship it back. But it is obvious you have no remorse in sending out a bootleg dvd, and you even call me ignorant. I'm not the one sending out bootlegs.

Seller's response -

I don't do intensive research on every DVD I own. The only version I was aware that existed was the one I owned, which I graciously sent to you. You also never worked with me to address any issues before giving me negative feedback. You also assumed that I knew that this was a bootleg version. That's how I bought it so thats how I assumed all of them were. Why don't you try working out any issues you have next time before acting like a pompous jerk and insulting the sender.

My final response before he most likely escalates to Goozex -

First off the only way to work out a dispute and access any options to handle this properly is through the negative feedback and dispute process. That is what it is there for. And it is your responsibility to ensure you have a legit copy and are posting the correct one to Goozex. You could have determined this or at least figured out something was wrong by looking at the Cover art provided by Goozex on the DVD page. Also, if you correctly posted it by searching for the UPC code, you would have noticed your version was not in the system. You sir are the one who has done nothing but insult me. All I've stated is how obvious the bootleg is and that it was your responsibility.

If you had simply apologized for sending a bootleg and offered to pay for shipping back and then initiated a cancel, we could have resolved this amicably. But all you've done is call me ignorant and a pompous jerk. You should look at the posts and see who is truly insulting who. Feel free to escalate this to Goozex when the time comes, because I will gladly send them the DVD with proper description on how obviously fake this DVD is.

I have finished my say in this matter and will wait to sort it out through Goozex.

There we have it. Once again, I'm the jerk. I'm the one at fault, and he still refuses to accept responsibility. I hope if this is escalated to Goozex, they do keep the feedback. He deserves to learn his lesson.

Well there is no denying that you're a jerk; but it is a seller's responsibility to make sure that he/she is offering a legitimate product; in this case it is also blatently obvious that it was a fake

While you're in the right G-Nitro, I'm not sure cover art is really the end-all-be-all. Muse isn't exactly great about game cover art, nevermind DVDs, which have tons of varieties.

Which it clearly states on the back. e-mail:dvdshop2001@mail2000.com.tw (.tw = Taiwan)  Plus the only parts of this DVD cover art in English are the title of the movie (repeated), e-mail address and the technical aspects. It is just too blatant

Too bad this person you're disputing with is likely to escalate it to Goozex and have it sent in, or I'd totally ask for it from you (even though I currently have no idea what it is).

I know exactly what you mean about the email on the dvd. Quite a few years ago, my aunt supposedly bought the complete boxset of Lain as a Christmas present for my cousin on Amazon. She received what she thought was only the first volume since it was very thin (size of 1 dvd case), and the front cover art resembled Disc 1's cover art (which also happens to be the same as the legit boxset art). I don't remember if she complained about it, but she ended up giving it to me and got the full set for my cousin. Low and behold, the "first volume" she received was actually a bootleg of the entire series on two discs. It too had the exact email you mentioned; however, the box art and printing on the boxset was very professional looking so I can understand how she was fooled.

But I've seen the really obvious bootlegs with the foreign characters, bad english/engrish, and repeated words. I don't see how anyone could mistake those for legit copies unless they are really clueless.

Actually if you look, the box art and printing look good at first glance to most. but they always have a strange blurring effect to them that makes it not look quite right, usually it's nto too noticeable but I have gotten used to spotting it. As soon as I pulled the DVD out of the mailer, I knew it was bootleg because it just looked wrong. Then I noticed the all japanese/chinese writing, the chinese subtitles being the very first choice, the taiwanese e-mail address, and no indication of ADV Films logo anywhere.

I can see why this would fool most non-anime fans, but most anime fans can see a bootleg copy just by looking at the overall packaging. The way the guy responds to me tries to make it sound like he had no clue it was bootleg, but comes off as someone trying to hide that fact.

Quick question for you anime aficionados.  I'm looking to get Ghost in the Shell: SAC 2nd Gig from Amazon and I'm a little confused.  One set is $90.00 and one is $45 by Anime Legends.  Are they bootleggers?

Here's the .ca link:

http://www.amazon.ca/Ghost-Shell-SAC-Complete-Collection/dp/B000VNMMPC/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=dvd&qid=1257539729&sr=8-1

http://www.amazon.ca/Ghost-Shell-2nd-Anime-Legends/dp/B002EBRF7O/ref=pd_cp_d_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1257539729&sr=8-1

While the $90 will I guess 'match' the season 1 I have, the Anime Legends one is half the price.  It's also in the Goozex database:

edit:

disregard this post.  i needs my english language.  $90 it is Tongue Tied

So this bootleg dvd dispute keeps getting better and better. LOL

He now wants to work it out, but still calls me a pompous jerk. Says he will pay for shipping to get it back. I said ok, send me the cost of shipping to paypal, pm me your address and initiate a cancel. I will then send it back.

He says no, that I haven't proved myself trustworthy and he won't pay me until he receives it.

I finally told him I'm done, and that I have almost 1700 trades combined in and out, and he thinks I'm not trustworthy. So I told him screw it, and to escalate it to Goozex.

Man I'm tired of dealing with these traders who have no clue....
