Lurknomore:

I still stand by earlier opinion of boxing being more lethal.  A bloody nose is no match for actual head trauma.

I certainly respect your opinion Lurk, as I stand by my own. I was honestly expecting this to spark a heated debate, one that is all too common now-a-days with Boxing vs. MMA. They are two entirely different forms of competition and they both require specific training to achieve greatness in their respective fields.

Anybody got any comments on the UFC matches this past Saturday?

Most of the fights were pretty lackluster. Brandon Vera's performance in particular was a total let down. Granted, he changed his weight class, and I'm not a professional fighter or anything but wouldn't you cut weight and spar with someone to try and get used to the feeling?

Rory Markham had an impressive win. He was good in the IFL, I'm anxious to see how he'll fair in the UFC. He looked like he was in trouble for a minute then BAM! Kicked the guy in the face. All over.

I'm not a fan of Frankie Edgar, but he beat Hermes Franca quite badly. The first round was good with both guys being aggressive, but then it all went downhill for Franca. I think after the first round the only thing he did was manage to pull off a great knee to the face of Edgar, but it was too little, too late.

Anderson Silva is a total monster. First off, James Irvin is a tough guy, yes. Knockout power? Absolutely. Great fighter? Not really. How many big fights have we seen him in in the past couple of years? About none. Yeah he whooped Houstan Alexander real good, but Alexander is new to the sport and got a couple good knockouts early in his career that made Joe "I play favorites with certain fighters" Rogan start talking about him like he was something special. Then he got schooled by Thiago Silva and knocked the F out by Irivin. Anyway, back to my point, The Sandman wasn't a real challenge for Anderson Silva as he was someone to show off what Silva can do. Who will be able to stop Anderson Silva? I can't answer that right now.

I'm not sure if you know or not but that whole free event was to get fans to watch the UFC while the brand Affliction put on their first ever PPV "Banned". The main event was Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia. For the record, I absolutely detest Tim Sylvia. He's gotten by with his height and weight. His strategy is to hopefully catch someone with his sloppy strikes where there is no technique, its all just using his enormous reach advantage. If that doesn't work (and it usually doesn't) than he takes them to the ground and holds all his weight on them, doing nothing progressive to win a fight, just to win by decision. I'm glad he's gone from the UFC. Fedor, on the other hand is arguably the best heavyweight in the world. The only other fighter who competes for this title is Randy Coture, and people have been dreaming about that match for a while now. Honestly, I think Fedor would mop the floor with Randy. Fedor is 28-1, his only loss came from getting cut and the doctor stopping the fight. In a sense, he hasn't been beaten and if you've ever seen him fight, you know what he's capable of. Needless to say, he destroyed Tim Sylvia who had no business fighting someone like Fedor. Beat him up a little bit, then choked in out in 36 seconds in the first round.

I'm all jacked up over this next event UFC is putting on. Being an old fan of WWE and loving Brock Lesnar, I really want to see him succeed. Heath Herring isn't a pushover, but he seems to crack under pressure a lot. Brock's fight with Frank Mir proved he's ready for MMA. He dominated the match and had Steve Mazzagatti not stopped the fight to take a point away from Brock (quite oddly) than Brock was in a great position to win the fight. Mir's jui-jitsu came through though and he got the win. It was bitter sweet. I like Brock a lot but Mir needed that win more.

Roger Huerta and Kenny Florian has the potential to be the fight of the night. Florian has gotten considerably better since his days in The Ultimate Fighter show. He got a title shot, but Shawn Sherk destroyed him with his power. Roger Huerta is definitely one of the best lightweights today. He's another guy with fast pace and no breaks for his opponents.

Then of course GSP vs. John Fitch. I like John Fitch a lot, he's proven himself as a great fighter, but I question if he's good enough to beat GSP, especially if GSP is on top of his game. GSP brings a lot to the UFC and he tends to throw people off their strategies by attacking his opponents directly at their strengths.

Thanks...any sorry! I'm really passionate about MMA. I've been watching it for a long time now and once I get started talking about it, I tend to go off into all kinds of tangents, much like I did just trying to talk about one event. It's a great sport and I love how big it's gotten in the last few years.

No need to apologize, that was a great review.  I think the Silva and Markham fights were the best fights, due to the knockouts, lol!

MMA is where it's at for me. Brock Lesner talks a lot of trash for someone who can't finish. Sitting on someone for a couple rounds and punching them isn't exciting. I can't stand those wins and then to parade around like your awesome is hilarious. Also, going head first trying to tackle someone while they are on the ground trying to get up is very dangerious. I hope they control brock before he head butts someone to death.

I'm waiting for a unification fight as I've been watching a lot of WEC with faber and condit. They have some exciting fights!

Please bring on the MMA HD and the main reason I watch so much WEC even though I still watch Spike when it's new.

Not to say I'm completely uninterested in this ... but the last time I watched people beat the crap out of each other as 'entertainment' Bob Backlund was WWF champ ...

I'm a big fan of Brock Lesnar's. I was in WWE and I am in MMA but you can't argue the fact that he had many, many opportunities to end his fight with Heath Herring and he just didn't know how to capitalize. I read an interview he did where he stated he didn't finish the fight due to a fight plan he had going into the match, I don't think anyone is that dumb. He's just too inexperienced at the moment. You cannot doubt his physical strength and athletic ability, however. Given time and proper training, Lesnar is going to be a real force to be reckoned with in MMA, but until then he is going to be someone heavily relying on just strength and a wrestling background and we all know that will only take you so far.

yawn. he's paid huge bucks for what? just like kimbo. why?

there are ton of total packages out there. They really need to pay the people who have proven to excite people vs just name and hype.

either way. it's good for the audience and I have no problem with that. Actually enjoy the reality show more than the ppv ufc.

Kimbo is one of those guys who was at the right place at the right time. He gained a huge cult following due to his online fights, I for one was a person who watched all the Kimbo fights I could and was excited to see where he would go when he was finally signed an MMA deal. Thing is, Showtime needed someone to draw and Kimbo is there go-to guy. Unfortunately for him James Thompson exposed a big void in his ability and that's his ground game...probably to no one's surprise though.

So now Kimbo is going to be taking on Ken Shamrock and this raises a pretty interesting match for me. Stylistically, this match should be heavily in Ken Shamrock's favor, however he is 44 years old and is on a bit of a losing streak. If Kimbo connects a big punch, Shamrock will drop and look like a washed up fighter. If Shamrock wins, it will most definitely be by submission, and I'd almost bet anything that Showtime would immediately change gears and start paying Ken the big bucks until he loses.

EliteXC as a promotion is pretty horrible, especially their early shows that were filled with long drawn out entrances, dancing girls and uneducated announcers. Just because Mike Goldberg plays an announcer on TV (which he often states things wrong) his brother, former pro wrestler Bill Goldberg was even worse.

There are certainly some PPV's that end up being stinkers. Usually the one's where all the matches seem to go the distance and the judges have to decide who wins. I'm not saying there aren't good matches that go the distance, the most notable one that I can think of recently would be Chuck Lidell vs. Wanderlei Silva, but most judge decided matches end up sucking all the fun out of an event.

Speaking of Chuck, if he loses to Rashad Evans, I will have lost all faith in him. If there are any Rashad fans out there and I doubt it, unless you're in his family, he has no business being in the cage with Chuck Lidell. Hopefully Chuck beats him down.

man, if chuck loses to evans. it's going to really hurt his position to fight with the big dogs.

I'm not a big evans fan but in the show dude fought the most and kept winning. if he can actually take chuck down and keep him down while putting a hurting I think he will win. But really, who can sit on chuck? NO one.

My fav is still rich franklin. dude in his pink get up is hilarious looking. come on now. pick a better color scheme.

Yeah and if pink wasn't bad enough he pairs it with brown...blah. Pretty bad. And then there's Roger Huerta's fight shorts which are so tight I'm pretty sure I see veins. Makes for some pretty funny looking positions though.
