On that note, are there other films that take an uncommon viewpoint in war?  Like from the Germans (or even the Russians [I own Enemy at the Gates]) from WWII?

The North Vietnamese in Vietnam?

The South in the Civil War?  (Not that I know of many Civil War films)

The British in the Revolution?

etc etc...

Its not really a "war" film, but Boy in Striped Pajama's takes the viewpoint of a kid in Germany during the world war. He gets to see what Nazi's were doing, how propaganda was trying to brainwash him, and the camps etc...Its a VERY good movie, but like i said its not War, its just the behind the scenes i guess you can say.

So... is Apocalypse Now conspicuously absent, or is it just too obvious?
Moving on though.

Paths of Glory - An early Kubrick film, and IMO is just as strong as Full Metal Jacket.  This movie lays bare the arrogance that led to the massive waste of human life in the futile trench warfare* of WW1 between France and Germany.

The Downfall - I also mentioned this in Decrypted's excellent movie thread.  But I'll reiterate here that it has to be the most honest, and human portrayal of Hitler I've ever seen in a movie.  He was an terrible man, yes.  But I never understood how that somehow disenfranchises him as a member of the human race.

The Battle of Algiers - A film that is based on the events of the Algerians' war for independence from France.  The entire film just oozes realism, and gives a pretty fair portrayal of both sides of the conflict.  Human drama at it's best.

Grave of the Fireflies - I must second larpi's suggestion here.  An extremely sad film which is both a human tragedy, and an example how war is more often then not waged against civilians.

Oh yeah, and how can we forget Dr. Strangelove.  Best war comedy ever. Big Smile

*[EDIT] - "warfare" is not spelled "war-fair".

I really enjoyed Apocalypse Now, but it's not a typical war film.  The film is an adaption of the classic novella Heart of Darkness, which is about the evils of the Europeans colonizing Africa.  The thing that made Apocalypse Now so great is that it kept the great themes of the book while transposing the story into a new setting.  Couple that with great cinematography and some terrific acting and you have my vote for the best war film of all time.

In high school, after reading Heart of Darkness we watched Apocalypse Now. Really puts a great film into an even deeper perspective.

If you like that kinda thing, check out O' Brother, Where Art Thou?
It is essentially The Odyssey by Homer, but in the dust bowl era.

Jurassic I think listed 5 movies I hadn't seen...I'll have to give them all a look.

I could have sworn I'd seen Apocalypse Now, but the more I think about it, it sounds like I hadn't.

The Miracle is a relatively recent movie isn't it?  I wonder if that's on DVD yet.

I think Apocalypse Now is sort of like Casablanca in that it feels like you've seen it, before you've  actually seen it.

I blame pop-culture.

I had no idea those two films were related.  I'd been eyeing them both on Netflix, but hadn't pulled the trigger yet.

Yeah, so many if its scenes are infused into many many war movies we see today.

I wouldn't recommend Miracle at St. Anna, I didn't really like it at all. But that's me, and it does give you an interesting (albeit historically incorrect presented as being factual) version of events.
