Sports wise, I just wish they would drop the yearly updated versions for maybe a 2 or 3 year lifespan game that lets you get DLC for cheap.  Updated roster, etc.  It would save them money development wise, and definitely save the customer money.  But I guess as long as little Johnny gets his mom to buy him the new madden at 60 bucks a year, not counting if its a collector's edition, plus NCAA for 60, etc, they will suck the system dry.

EA has stated this is what they are going to do with their Fight Night and UFC franchises, they are going to rotate years so you'll get a 2 year life cycle out of them.   They could do the same with NCAA/Madden, but they make too much money off of those, why would they?

This is especially a problem on the Xbox 360.  There are sooooo many shooters on the Xbox.  I do play a lot of shooters, but I try to stay away from the stinkers.  The story alone is generally what draws me to specific games.  I wish there was more variety in genres, but what can you do?  That's why I have multiple systems!

With RPG's you never know what story they're going to pull out of their ass and you can expect something significantly different. Gameplay might be about the same, but the quests, the maps, where you go, what weapons and armor you get, how you upgrade them usually differs a quite a bit from rpg to rpg. Most shooters you pick up a gun and shoot a person, a zombie, an alien or a mutant. All they can throw in is some tacky "power" to make it different.

Watch this:

Single shot pistol

Close range area shotgun

long range single round at a time sniper rifle with long reload

assault rifle full auto

rocket launcher

melee weapon

One or two "special weapons"

and there's every gun in every shooter game you've ever played for the past 20 years. ^ ^

Half Life 2 was a great example on a great shooter.  The inclusion of physics adds a whole new realm to the genre.  I remember doing the trivial 'see-saw' puzzle during single player, using weights to lift my character up to a higher platform.  Simple, but no less awesome when done for the first time.

RPGs and their 'out the ass' stories could be looked at with a similar narrow view.  Generally average boy is thrown into a save the world role either by chance or long lost heritage.  Meets a girl who's vaguely interested in him (should change by the end of the story).  Inner conflict.  Dispute resolution.

Throw in some loot or stat whoring to fill the void and you've got your start of a fine RPG.  I'm not saying this is a bad thing, as there are many fine storylines built on the above premise, but it doesn't sound like a lot when boiled down eh?

then what is the point of playing most games?
I play games mainly for the articles.  The comics are funny too.

Anyone else been noticing this?

The ONLY game that matters is Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare. Pretty soon it'll be MW2. But I can't enjoy any other games now that infinity ward has taken the floor... except wii sports :D

Only difference between games for me is the story, and because I'm not that intrested in it...

I dunno... Maybe to actually play the game! Story is only good if it has great gameplay. I'd rather have a great game with no story, if I wanted a story I'll buy a movie...

I couldn't stand Half Life 2, I would be able too... But, without regenerating health I have to save every 15-30 seconds just in case I run out of health... I actually had to restart a whole mission because of that issue...

....regenerating health is killing the genre....lol.  I hate the 'hide for a sec to get full health' mindset it draws.

Coming from a 'not a big fan', I'm not sure that's a feather in insta-heals cap...Smile

Being able to hide whilst you 'Wolverine' heal in a corner after being riddled with rounds?  I can't recall what game started this tomfoolery, but it should be ashamed!

COD 3 maybe?  I think 1 and 2 had health, but I'm stretching my memory a bit.

I think it's a great way to get the not so hardcore shooter fans to actually enjoy the game.  I wouldn't mind it being a menu option or tied to a difficulty setting.

That I can hop on board with.  Though I'm sure that'd be too much work on the designers.

Easier mode would just sport this instaheal feature, but harder modes would need to incorporate a health system as well as throw some medpacks around or some other form of healing, which may be too much of a bother.

I agree that "everything is a shooter" now is an annoying trend.  ME and FO3 are great examples of beloved RPG genre becoming shooters w/ RPG elements.

The problem is the history of warfare.  As technology has improved over time, this has made RANGED weapons the superior weapon in all cases.

Spears, then bows, crossbows, guns, missiles, lasers... always trump melee weapons.  Only in fantasy like Star Wars are melee weapons better.

For videogames it drives me nuts how EVERYTHING has guns in it now.  Even tho I love a great shooter like Half Life, Deus Ex,  Halo 1... there are too many of them.
