I'm new to MGS and I am wondering which game I should start on? Does it matter if I go in order or not? I have only played MGS5 and I love it, which is why I am going to get into the series. Any help here would be awesome. Thanks fellow Goozers.

You couldent be asking a better person.Fiest off, there is no mgs5,at least not yet.I take it you mean mgs4?

Anyway,for the basic 4 I recomend the mgs1,mgs4,mgs2,mgs3.

All of the games games are great,I just order them that way as my favorite. There are many other mgs games you may get into as well such as acid, portable ops, digital graphic novel,vr missions, the upcoming metal gear rising, and more.

To really get into the series you should start on the original which is available in many forms now (ps1, psn, gcn), but the third one might not be a bad choice if your trying to understand the story. You can probably get into mgs2 but the story probably wont make much sense without playing the first one.

As an added note, the third one plays the different than the first two mainly with the way stealth works, but the first two are very similar gameplay wise.

MGS4, not 5 haha.

Im a HUGE (HUGE) MGS fan so here you go.

If you want the same experience as everyone else, play them in order. They make sense, will surprise you and keep you interested just like that alone. If you want to play in order according to story then go MGS3, MGS1, MGS2, MGS4. If you already played 4 then some stuff is already somewhat ruined for you lol, it goes back to the other games ALOT.

Also be sure to include the PSP game if you have a PSP. Portalbe Ops if im not mistaked falls between MGS3 and MGS1 in the story.

If you want to play them in ordr of best to worse (not that any are bad) then go MGS1, MGS4, MGS3, MGS2.

If i may, I recomend you buy the essential collection from Gamestop or Amazon as its only 20 dollars now. You might even be able to get it off here on Goozex, but it comes with them all except MGS4.

Yes, sorry for the typo guys.

OK thanks but what about MGS2 Sons of Liberty, MGS2 Substance, MGS3 Snake Eater, MGS3 Subsistence.

I don't get all the sub-titles. Where do those fall in line? I would like to get all the games, and play them all in order according to the story.

P.S. I'll get the essential collection off of goozex.

sub titles mean nothing in terms of the story. They all just added bonus things to the game like VR training (basicaly just mini games) or like MGS3 i think it was a hunting thing forget what your hunting, was kinda fun. The essential collection has you covered though so I wouldnt worry.

Plus if you need more help and have a PS3. On the PlayStation store go view "all games" then select Metal Gear Solid 4, and their is a encyclopedia for the entire series there for free. It tells you the backstories of everyone, the storyline more in depth, and all kinds of other non-sense.

MGS 1, is something u NEED to play to start out with the story, MGS 2, really doesn't tie down with the majority, since Raiden is first introduced, and sort of like a 1 - 3 hour play through with SOLD Snake. MGS3 takes u a trip BACK in time during the times of the Cold War, with NAKED SNAKE, now the EPIC game that continues from where MGS2 left off, MGS4! This will serve up everything u didn't understand about the previous titles, and just a beautiful presentation and OMG a mind blowing ending (NO SPOILERS HERE Wink). You must play to love it!

Yeah don't worry about the subtitles, essentials is all you need. Awesome collection.

Die hard fans are going to chastise me for this, but if you have access to a gamecube or wii, I'd check out twin snakes. After playing newer titles, as great as MGS1 once was... guys, it's dated. Twin Snakes does a tiny bit to help bring the first up to the playability level of 2 and 3. Purists dislike how they gave the cutscenes a shot of matrix steroids. I like seeing snake flip around like a ninja. Comes down to personal taste.

I'm still waiting to get Twin Snakes, I heard it was pretty good.  I have 1-4 already.

This thread is getting me pumped to play 4.  I bought my PS3 in Feb solely for MGS4, and for whatever reason, I've barely touched it.....and I adore the series!  I must rectify this.

MGS 1 > Twin Snakes most would argue

I also have MGS4 sitting on my shelf, I thought I'd finish it a few weeks ago but never even got around to installing it.

MGS3 Sub = the best in the series IMO

I'd argue that's purely out of nostalgia. Having played the other entries in the series, it's really, really difficult to get back into vanilla MGS1. Twin snakes is just more playable. Prettier never hurts either.

God, Metal Gear Solid would be nothing without Metal Gear. Whip out your nintendo and start there. Then pull out your MSX and play the sequel. From there go to the Solid series. Skip 2, as it is crap (j/k). Don't skip it, but it is crap compared to the others.

Metal Gear (no solid) have interesting stories, but are so dated that some non-hardcore gamers just cant play them lol. I have them though, like i said great stories. Might as well add i have the book and comics too haha, waitin for the second book in november.

As for Twin Snakes being better, it all depends. Sure it "looks" better to an extenet, but its not really MGS. Yes im one of those fans. MGS is true on PS1, the Twin Snakes just ruined some things for me, partly because it wasn't made by Kojima so they tweaked things that didn't need tweaking. Im all for getting another remake on PS3 though.
