It's looks like Sony has jumped of suppling BC to it's users, there will also will not be a Linux OS on there. I just recently picked up a 60gig for $300 and would never purchase another type of PS3.

Level-5's White Knight Chronicles

I had high hopes for  this game until it actually released in Japan.  Very disappointing given the great games Level-5 has released in the past.

*hugs his MGS4 PS3*  It's not perfect, but it'll do.

As nice as the slim ones look, I don't think I'd ever look outside of a BC capable one.  Unfortunately, it looks as though SONY has once and for all turned its back on that.

We can look forward to digital repurchases though I'm sure!

Brenex:

Do you guys think that that means there will never be BC on the slim and that it could come to the phat PS3 or, because of this article

http://kotaku.com/5340337/sony-explain-why-the-ps3-slim-has-no-backwards-compatibility

there will not be any future production in providing backwards compatibility on any of the playstation 3 consoles?

BC via hardware I consider to be dead on the PS3 - simply too costly for Sony, who i'm sure is just happy to not be losing money on every PS3 slim they will sell.

Sony did patent software tech for PS2 BC using the PS3 (Link) but this has not seen the light of day, likely due the PS2 continuing to be sold at retail along with other reasons.  My theory is once the PS2 has run it's course, we'll likely see PS2 emulation on all model PS3s  to some extent.  There is definitely money to be made by selling PS2 games (or even a PS2 emulator) over PSN.

I'd definitely pay to have that ability on my 40G (and possibly Slime Wink )  Almost every PS2 game I've received from Goozex remains in my bedroom next to my PS2 just waiting to be played Huh?

I know Famitsu gave it a big "meh" but the videos i've seen looked great.  Doesn't seem like it's a system seller, but in the anemic world of PS3 RPGs, it seems worthy of a try.

Plus I still have warm memories of Dark Cloud...  Embarrassed

I've never played DC, but I got through a majority of DC2.  It seemed really redundant (around chapter 7 I think) so I quit and never looked back.  I'll always love Level-5 because of DQVIII, Rogue Galaxy and Jeanne D'arc...now if I could just finish their games Indifferent

I plan to pick one up, but I intend to wait a few months and see how the new hardware holds out. Smaller means more confined means more heat.

Smaller also means less heat generated, so Sony is probably ok going with the slim form factor.  (Remember it's not just the case getting smaller, the actual components inside are smaller too!)

Still, not a bad idea to wait and see if the new hardware has any issues.  Usually things get better with each iteration... but waiting a couple months won't hurt.  (I'm targetting a PS3 slim purchase over Christmas, budget willing, and hope that any early reports of problems will be out by that time.)

As for backwards compatibility, Sony seems to have abandoned any customers interested in this feature.  Good thing they didn't promise that PlayStation was a brand and backwards compatibility would be available.

The only way we'll see PS2 games being played on PS3 is if (a) someone owns an old one, or (b) Sony decides that charging for PSN versions of those games offers enough profit to be worthwhile.  I think that PSN versions will become available eventually - but probably not until PS2 is truly dead.  That gives Sony a chance to continue cashing in on the PS2 library long after the console is gone, and would earn publishers more money for their old games than what could be received from second-hand sources.

It's too bad this isn't available though...  The PS2 library was awesome, and there are still many games worth playing.  While some people don't care about PS2 emulation, it would have been a HUGE selling point for me and a significant number of other people.  Of course, I think that PS3 looks pretty reasonable at $300 anyway... so this isn't a make-or-break deal any longer.

I agree seeing as how it's the best blu-ray player and now is comparable to the top of the line stand alone blu-ray players, I think this new form factor is a clear choice for those that are in the market. Of course you could still get the $99 blu-ray player at walmart if you just want a cheap player.

Guess I will be keeping my slim PS2 indefinitely. Not such a big deal but I am not going to give sony anymore money for games I already own on the PS2 (and since my PS3 had to go back for repairs Confused.)

Why does the PS3 NEED to have BC? Doesn't just about everyone and their cousin have a PS2? Why play it on your PS3, it's not like it makes the game any better. I see such few advantages to make it worth while playing on the PS3 (wireless controller, lack of clutter, but it's not like the PS2 slim is an albatros...). Doesn't make sense to me for anyone to refuse to buy a PS3 and miss out on all those great gmaes already out and on the horizon because you think it should be BC with PS2.

I have a 60GB PS3 and have played only 1 PS2 game for a grand total of 15 minutes to see how it worked. When I realized it was no different than a regular PS2, I kept using the pS2 to save the wear and tear on my PS3.

This thinking is flawed in that it ignores the change in architecture, particularly of the Cell processor which went from 90nm SOI to 65nm, and then to 45nm.  This drastically reduces power draw and heat.

Besides the obvious clutter factor (doubly so since I have a launch fat PS2 that's still kicking), apparently the PS3 handles PS2 games better on HDTVs due to upconverting them (or so I've read), which would make sense for all newer TV owners.  Others may have lost their PS2 due to wear and tear, having nothing to play them [older titles] on currently.

It's not so far fetched in my mind, but for other reasons.  We're talking about a pretty drastic redesign of the console. While it the PS3 slim may not have serious issues from heat, there may be other elements of the redesign that cause issues.  The early model PS2 slims had a few problems that were worked out in the 2nd batch of hardware.

Not to make anyone paranoid... Indifferent

Really? I've not seen any difference and don't recall reading that anywhere. Do you have a link?
