I saw speculation of heating issues mentioned on the first page, so I figured I'd chime in.  The last two iterations of PS3 models improved chip design (from 90nm to 60nm and then 45nm).  This greatly improves the efficiency of the processor(s); there's much lower power draw and much lower heat.

This is why newer PS3s don't have to turn their fans up to high as often as my 80GB MGS4 model.  I've actually been planning on getting a new PS3 and breaking out my old fatty PS2 for exactly this reason.  I never use the card readers, anyway, and I can get a little usb hub to make up the difference.  =)

Hexpane:

July 09 I think?  The latest firmware.  I just played a PS2 game last week using an old save.  Yes I did the backup to external HDD everything.

Sony owes you 70 hours back man, that is just unacceptable.   I have like 200 hours of Vagrant Story saves on my HDD

I sent mine in just before Fallout 3 came out last year...September 2008 I think.  The extra kick in the groin came when I tried to  re-add my old FFVII, Star Ocean and Suikoden PS1 save data, I found out the hard way that all but 1 of my old PS1 memory cards no longer worked.

Such is life...  Huh?

Sony did the repairs for free and sent a replacement to me in about a week.  Considering I bought my PS3 used over eBay and was out of waranty (but lucky enough to have the GTA4 freezing problem which was a known issue) - I can accept the replacement PS3 in exchange for my game saves.

The option to add an additional OS has been removed.
The power cord is now 2-pin instead of the 3-pin cord regularly found with computer power supplies.
The touch-sensitive sensors for power and eject are replaced with buttons.
The hard drive is found at the front underneath the disc drive instead of at the left side.
It supports Bravia Sync with compatible Sony televisions and receivers.
The surface at the top is not shiny It's the rough plastic similar to the surface of the PS2.
It cannot be placed vertically without easily tipping over. There is going to be a vertical stand for the PS3 slim sold separately.

Pretty much sux how they removed the disc-feed, I love that from the legacy PS3

Definitely a much needed move from Sony. I have to admit, I'm surprised that there's no PS2 backwards compatibility. I suppose they don't think that this is something that the average consumer cares about? Maybe I'm not average, but I have 30+ PS2 games, and I'd prefer one less console in my entertainment center. Oh well. I'll have to stick with software emulated PS2 for now...

I'm honestly a little surprised a few people are still saying "not enough games".  If this were 2007 or early 2008, i'd agree that it's slim pickings.  From mid-2008 to what will be released late 2009 and early 2010, there's actually a pretty damn good lineup of exclusives plus the multi-platform titles.

I'm just curious if there are specific games/franchises people are waiting on or if nothing really looks all that appealing.

same here. i bought a 360 the first week 3 broken consoles later i gave ps3 a try and havent stopped playing since. like you said early on wasnt much to choose from but now there is plenty of good exclusives. hopefully games like uncharted 2 and MAG will help console sales

Heck, for me, the fact that it's using the new chip architecture, its case is no longer that blasted glossy black, and it's much smaller... I'm totally pre-ordering one this Friday.  Selling my PS3 (MGS4 version, backwards-compatible) will cover most, if not all, the cost of the "up"grade.

We're four years into the current console cycle, I think it's too little too late as far as giving them a leg up.

But this is a good thing, no one should get to stay on top for too long. Nintendo fell flat on their face with the N64. and that happening was the best thing to happen to gaming since the 2600.

I can't be the only one who got a long, enjoyable life out of my N64?

Absolutely not.  You're likely one of the many, many who enjoyed hours and hours of N64... Goldeneye... Smash Bros.... Starfox... etc...

NINTENDO SIXTY-FOOOOOUUUUUUURRRRRR!!!

Also, I'm preordering my new PS3 now... gonna throw a 500GB drive in it and transfer all of my (transferrable) data.  I'll just have to start over on Rock Band.  *sigh*

It's sad, but I'll have to work my hold queue better with all 3 current consoles; I'm already at 96 on hold requests with pc/wii/360 titles... I understand the point of the limit, but it is a little aggravating deactivating titles to my watch list for higher demand ones.

Nintendo 64 was one of the better consoles ever created, in my opinion. I know many people that still play it (especially in college) for super smash or mario kart. Still play mine at home.

It must run drastically cooler as it has far fewer vents compared to the older PS3.
