Call of Duty 4 Modern Warfare is a solid multiplayer online game with and/or without friends.

And Modern Warfare 2 is gonna make it much sweeter 11.10.09

• Marvel Vs Capcom 2
• Street Fighter IV (if playing with friends)
• GTA IV is fun when going in with a group of people and doing some drive-bys

if you have friends with cod 5, i  would definitely get it.  The online is not the greatest, but hey, nazi zombies more than makes up for it in my opinion.  I couldn't even tell you how many hours have been put into nazi zombies

Without a doubt the most fun I've had on xbox live was with call of duty: world at war. Not only do you have the traditional multiplayer modes, (deathmatch, king of the kill, etc.) but you also have nazi zombies. It's gaming bliss.

If I was going to play online against players I would go for Team Fortress 2 or maybe Marvel Ultimate Alliance f you want to play together as a team.

the only downside to the COD series is that you can't splitscreen multiplayer on Live like you can with Halo 3 and L4D its only one per box there.  But if you're just playing by yourself or your friends have 360s then go with that
