So are you all in agreement that it really doesn't matter what order I play them in? It seems like some of them would be harder to get than others, so I may just have to disregard their number when playing.

yep; they all have different stories, battle systems and characters

Pizza guys are getting worse and worse looking. I guess all the good ones went into porn.

Yeah, I'm being lazy and not reading threads. FF7 can be bought and downloaded off the PSN network with PS3. Just thought I'd throw that in. ^ ^

FFVII most people say is one of the greatest games of all time.

I'm just not one of them.  I'm not trying to start a flame war, I just didn't like the game.

I like FF VII, but it isn't my fave.  But then, I've never played one on a console - my first exposure was FF I & II: Dawn of Souls on the GBA (well, DS Phat), then FF IV, V, VI on GBA, III on DS and IV again on DS.  Then I recently grabbed VII on PSN for my PSP, and it is pretty decent ... but IV and VI are my faves.

Another thought - Suikoden.  Of course it costs a billion points for PSx and is <$10 on PSN (can't remember if it is $5.99 or $9.99).

I think the reason why people like FFVII so much is because it more than likely was their first experience with the series; while those who were familar before the jump to 3D rendering seem to like FFIV and VI more. I personally think that the FFVII was nothing really special with most of the systems taken from previous games. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy the game and it did bring some new systems like the racing element which was seen in the online FFXI game, limit breaks the way we know them today and emo spiky hair protagonists, but it wasn't THE best game.

Vagrant Story - while already mentioned, is BRILLIANT!

You must read a weapons building FAQ first, but the story is only about 15 hours.  The real fun is the Newgame+ which opens up the best weapons and higher level areas.

VS is a complete original, there is no other game like it, the closest there is Parasite Eve which is also fantastic but not nearly as deep as VS.

VS and PE are my 2 fav PSone RPGs that are not Strat games.  FFtactics is my fav Start RPG on the PSone.  I still play these games in 2009, they are that good, that fun, and that deep.

Chrono Trigger is also a top 10 RPG of all time, even the PSone port which has some loading issues is completely awesome.  You won't notice the problems w/ the PSone port unless you played SNES/DS versions

VstoryGunblade attack from Final Fantasy 8.

I second Legend of Dragoon, the Parasite Eve series (1 & 2), Final Fantasy Anthology (contains V and VI from the series), then Final Fantasy VII, VIII, and IX.  Those are my personal favorite PS1 RPGs.  I remember renting Legend of Legaia when I was young.  Didn't make it far, but it was fun for what I played, and I've since heard good things about it.  Oh!  Don't forget Wild Arms 2.  That game was fun for what I played of it.

As for a couple of PS2 RPGs, I'd recommend Shadow Hearts, myself.  Probably my favorite RPG.  Dark Cloud is a fun and interesting one, too.

i would recommend valkyrie profile or suikoden II although youd have to be lucky or pay a crazy amount for them.  these two were my favorite rpgs for the ps1.  valkyrie has a some pretty memorable characters and a good story if you are able to take on the steep learning curve.

Suikoden II had a great cast of characters. Trying to recruit all 108 characters to fight on your side was no hard task,  but it was always fun. It also has one of the coolest boss/boss fights in the the genre at that time.  if you do decide to play suikoden II, I think it would be better to start off with Suikoden 1 first.  Its follows the same timeframe and can transfer some extra characters into the next game.

i also recommend xenogears like everyone else Smile

It's 5.99.

While you're at the PSstore getting Suikoden, do yourself a huge favor and get Wild ARMs and Wild ARMs 2 for 5.99 each, too.

Since I don't have a ps3, im wondering if I can get these onto my psp, and also how much room do they take up? (never used the psn so if this sounds dumb sorry)

valkyrie profile

Is on the PSP as Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. (When you get to the PS2 I highly recommend VP: Silmeria (it's sequel of sorts))

Yup.  They look a bit better on psp than on ps3 too.  Each was a 1 disc game, so they shouldn't be more than 700mb each.

Final Fantasy X is really good. FF VII is the best one in my opinion. I would get Chrono Trigger for the DS and get Chrono Cross for the ps1.
