Silent Hill 1, 2 and 3 were great. Everything after that was kind of "meh".

SH1 is a classic that has never been matched.

SH2 had a chilling mature story, amazing music and is worth playing just for the cutscenes.

People who enjoy the RE series or games like F.E.A.R. etc... are mixing SHOOTERS with "horror" games.  RE4 and RE5 are basically action shooters.  So of course they are "less boring" in that you are "doing" more, aka shooting stuff.  "Playing a horror game at a friends house" is probably the worst way to sample.

The best way to play Silent Hill 1 or 2 is to play COMPLETELY ALONE, in a DARK quiet room at 2am.

i want to play this, i really really do; but everytime i start, i get a half hour in and am just so annoyed by the controls that i can't keep going

Pizza guys are getting worse and worse looking. I guess all the good ones went into porn.

The puzzles are worse.  But back in the day of PS2 prime, it was what it was.

Whoa, I didn't expect to get this much of a response.  Kudos to everyone that replied!

Dead Space, Condemned, Fatal Frame, Eternal Darkness, and F.E.A.R. all have been added to my requests. Here's to hoping one of them will be what I'm looking for. I've got the lights out, doors closed, and surround sound. Bring it. :3

The game I played at my friend's house was Resident Evil 4 (Wii). As I mentioned earlier, it's *main* draw seemed to be decapitating hordes of crazed people which turned me off (..like Gears of War..). I want a scary game not a let's kill a bunch of enemies who just happen to be gory game (if that makes any sense). Atmosphere should play a big role in these kind of titles in upping the creep factor and the scares should be more clever than just  zombies coming at you from all directions.

I'm still considering Silent Hill. Is it boring because it's slow paced and there's not a lot of shooting or is there something more? Because I can deal with the former.

More the former really.  The games aren't very "actiony", and have more of a focus on exploration and puzzle solving.

Well Silent Hill 1 is PSone so you have to take that into account.  Some people can not play low res games.  Personally I love the PS1 so it's not a problem.

But yes, not a lot of shooting, very slow, and mostly exploring and examining objects for "clues" to the wild story.  It's very creepy and builds like a horror movie.  But in context there was nothing like it at the time, now, 15 years later you have probably played a lot of clones and other horror/mood games.  The sound is one of the best parts of SH1

SH2 on the other hand you "expect" to have better controls and gameplay because it's PS2.  But sadly its the exact same clunky controls.  I remember throwing my controller quite a few times in frustration back in the day.

But I also remember being chilled to the bone after completing the story.   It's just a head trip and most of the "combat" is really running away.

Low-res graphics don't bother me in the least.  However, I'll have to go look for a playstation memory card before I can play it. I think I'll start with Silent Hill 2 and work from there. A game that can be discribed as a head trip, creepy, and builds like a horror movie is exactly what I'm looking for. The clunky controls might be a bummer but I'm willing to take that risk. Also, I haven't really explored horror games before so the experiance won't be that stale for me.

It's an older game, and the graphics are only slightly lower res, but I cannot recommend Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly enough if you want BOTH atmosphere AND minimal bloodshed (it's hard to decapitate someone with a Camera as your weapon).  If I recall it is backwards compatible on the 360.

That's not to say that there isn't gore, because there is.  If you ever watched "The Ring" or "The Grudge" or "The Eye (Japanese version)" then you'll get an idea of what you're getting into...

I am sad to say that even though I recommended it, and still do, you might find that Dead Space sorta falls in the same category. The devs originally based it off RE4, and it is mostly action, being overwhelmed at times, and scare chord type tactics. The thing about it that makes it so recommendation-worthy is the design and atmosphere of it. It's extremely immersive, as all the menus and whatnot don't take you out of the game, they're seen by the character. The sound is excellent, and I find myself pretty creeped out the entire time, even when nothing's going on. Doesn't change the fact that it's mostly an action game though. I'm going to have to switch up my recommendations and put condemned before dead space.

Condemned is a fair amount of first person action as well, mostly done with melee weapons fashioned from the environment around you (pulling pipes off walls, etc.), but it excels in messing with your head. It knows it doesn't need a million hobos bum-rushing (I amuse myself!) you, it just needs a handful, and to keep them at enough of a distance so you know they're there, but you don't quite know where, and shadows and sound and... I love that friggen game.

I can handle gore; it's just that I don't particurally enjoy it either. So if that's all there is to a game, it's a waste of my time. From the video reviews, Fatal Frame looks like it has a lot more to offer. The camera obsura is a neat idea and it looks just, well, creepy.

Mind effery is always welcome, yes.  So.. I'll check out Condemned before Dead Space.  I'll still check out the latter though since it seems like it has a unique envoirment/atmosphere.
