Phantasy Star II (Genesis): My first taste of true character death in a RPG, years before Final Fantasy VII made it cool.
Final Fantasy VI (SNES): The storytelling was miles ahead of it's contemporaries. I was floored to see Kefka succeed in "destroying the world" only to realise that the game wasn't over and you began to reassemble your party after a year had passed in the game.
Eternal Darkness (Gamecube): I have never...NEVER...had a game break the 4th wall with me in the way this game did. It got me twice...once with my game save (while I screamed obscenities) and again with the volume control. Silicon Knights are my heroes....
The Darkness (PS3): Admittedly I never finished the game, but I was gripped at the moment where the main character's girlfriend is about to be executed by the mafia. You stand only a few feet away able to see everything that is about to happen but completely powerless to do anything as The Darkness makes you watch the events unfold. This was probably the most angry and helpless a game has ever made me feel for reasons other than design issues.

Has to be StarCraft for me; there is a literal imprint of my 12-year old ass on my parent's leather office chair from playing that game for hours upon hours.
Mafia had a very strong emotional impact on me. I felt very strongly for all the characters in that game it was so well done. Hopefully the second one has the same effect.
Other ones are Final Fantasy 6 and 7, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana( playing with friends was a blast), and Mega Man legends for the playstation.
oh i forgot Earthbound and the Metal Gear Solid series.
The ending of Lost Odyssey made me cry like a baby, I don't mind saying. An excellent game about adult topics.
Suikoden I & II - Both games had key characters close to the protagonist die and the second one really hit me hard.
Final Fantasy VII - Aerith dying crushed me, as I spent a lot of time building her up and the relationship between her and Cloud.
Mass Effect - Tremendous story, filled with emotions and some very tough choices. I can't wait to continue this epic journey through the next two games.
Final Fantasy VI - Was just such a wodnerful story, that was filled with so many touching and tragic moments, I couldn't help but be sucked into it.
Oh and I haev to agree with an earlier comment on Saints Row 2. When you are forced to put down one of your own gang members due to his injuries, I was blown away by how much that tugged at my heart in a game that is known to not take itself too seriously.

I think you forgot Artificial Girl 3.

That didn't actually tug at my heart, but instead somewhere else.

And I thought I was the only one who had that reaction.
black for the ps2 was the game that got me into shooters.... game i played practilly 5 hours a day one summer was gears of war
Way more then any game everThe Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of TimeHonorable mentions-Resident Evil 4 (ps2)-Elder Scrolls: Oblivion(ps3)-Metal Gear Solid 4 (ps3)-Madden Series -Super Smash Bros. (n64)-Pokemon Yellow (GBC)-007 Goldeneye (n64)-Eternal darkness (GC)
I second both Resident Evil 4 and Goldeneye but for entirely different reasons. RE4 was the first RE game I actually played through and one of the most memorable experiences I had playing a game. I wasn't drawn into the story as much but the gameplay made me feel very tense at all times. Goldeneye was just one of those games I would play with my friends all night and never get tired of. I tried going back to it a few years ago and I just can't manage it. I've been corrupt too much by next generation.
Another one that sticks in my mind is Mortal Kombat. Any of them really but MK2 was the first one I bought (well, my parents had to buy it for me) and I just remember it being such a big deal back then, it's amazing how it's not nearly as controversal anymore and is pretty mild compared with what we get today. I also think Mario RPG and Mario 64 will stick with me forever. I am not a big RPG person but Mario RPG is one game that I played until the bitter end and it felt good to beat the final boss. I think I still remember where some of the secret coins are even. Mario 64 just blew me away with its graphics. It was my first glimpse into what the next gen systems could do and since I was the only one I knew that had a N64, it made me feel important.
Final Fantasy Tactics was a great game with a fantastic storyline. That is one of those games that I own and will never trade....though it has crossed my mind ;)
I was suprised at Grand Theft Auto 4's Storyline! It was pretty infuriating after a certain person was gunned down (No Spoilers for the 7 people who may have never played this game)
Chrono Trigger is worth a notable mention as well!
Bioshock... The storytelling was so amazing that it blew my socks off. The whole Ann Rand dystopia environment also helped a lot.
And of course, Mario... my first game I ever played was a Mario game for SNES.
