I have read a couple of reviews on these, but wanted some fellow Goozers opinions. (I really hope Txa replies as he is a computer game genius)

Is there really a patch for Fallout 1 that lets the time limit extend to 13 years in game time to get the water back and stop the Super Mutant Invasion?

Yes, I believe it was the 1.1 patch.  Extended it from 500 days (400 if you chose a certain path) to essentially limitless (13 yrs) so you dont have the looming time constraint.

My advice - play Fallout 1 first, and play it 'straight' (i.e. without patch).  It is relatively short for a RPG of the time, but it is one of those great experiences of gaming.  There are reasons why these games are held in the lofty esteem by gamers even after their graphics are outdated and the turn-based gameplay has fallen out of favor.

I started playing Fallout 1 on Gametap a while back, and now that Gametap's gone into "beta" with its new owners, nothing really works for me. So that 60 bucks for a year that I re-upped back in October, while seeming like a good deal at the time, was basically money down the drain.

I didn't renew in March because I simply wasn't using it - and the advent of stuff like GoodOldGames killed that aspect for me.  I would definitely recommend getting them that way ... Fallout 2 works fine from disk for me, but my FO1 copy took some jiggering around to install on Vista when I tried (better with XP), but they both work great from my GoG versions.

That's a huge plus about buying games from GoG.

I wish these two games would be re-released on console.  I can't PC game anymore without my wrist killing me after 15 minutes.  Friggin WoW destroyed my wrist and lower back and now, no more PC games for Feely........Sad

Yeah you just knew that business model would not work.  It sounded too good to be true.  No one can figure out how to make money off old games without gouging the users.  It just drives PC gamers to piracy unfortunately.

But yes, Fallout 1 is amazing, I liked it more than 90% of  "modern" RPGs I've played

I'd be interested in hearing about the 10% ...

I think we already went down this road in another post... but in general my top 10 RPGs list changes monthly... so a few months back I could not get enough Vagrant Story, 2 years ago I was hooked on Everquest ONline Adventures Fronts for the PS2 and refused to play any other games... then I was all over Baldur's Gate II, then it was Oblivion, then Disgaea, then replaying Summoner 1

Now I am neck deep in Summoner 2 , the 2nd time I've played the first half of the game.  ONly this time I read some tips first so my characters were balanced better and magically the game became super fun for me.

100pts off goozex and I've logged 30 hours into it and refuse to play any other games.  Go figure

Fallout 2 is AMAZING! Especially with the unofficial patch that fixes over 800+ bugs leftover from the official patch. Fallout 1 is really good also but i prefer Fallout 2. And make sure in Fallout 2 that your Intelligence is hogher than 4 or else you lose about half the game until its raised. Because noone wants to give you quests and it sucks.
