I'm sure both Sony and Microsoft are trying to figure out how to get a piece of the action from the Wii's 'casual crowd' install base.  A couple of recent articles have got me thinking that these often rumored additions to the PS3 and 360 may become reality.

I question how beneficial this may be to either company as well as it's possible effect on the video game industry as a whole.  I don't believe we need any more waggle mini-game compilations, but there are still some unexplored avenues to take and possible innovations in gameplay if handled correctly.

EDIT: The Microsoft comment was pretty powerful, stating they would "completely transform how people think about home entertainment" at this year's E3.  I'm thinking motion control or the ability to pay for sandwiches with MS points.

Where do you weigh in on the subject?

Excited for possible motion controls on PS3 and 360?

  • Yes - it'll be interesting at least (16.3%)
  • Maybe - i'll take a 'wait and see' approach (24.5%)
  • No - the industry doesn't need any more waggle (55.1%)
  • Meh - these rumors are nothing new. Don't expect MS/Sony to jump in. (4.1%)

Unless the motion controls are more responsive, "Wii" do not need more waggle.

I'll be pretty disappointed if motion controls start appearing in games on the 360 especially if they become mandatory to use.

Wii is enough. This may work better, but will be a failure since parents won't pay an extra $300 - $400 for prettier mini-game compilations.

I have no idea why people think motion control schemes has to be a bad thing.  I would much rather play madworld, no more heroes, metriod prime3, wii sports, etc on the 360 with HD graphics and an online community.  I don't know why people are so close minded about this, even if some gimmicky mingames collections are introduced, I think what Nintendo "invented" this gen is revolutionary and others should jump on the bandwagon and improve on the idea.

That's not we're saying. Imagine they came out with a Halo 4 and you had to use motion controls. I don't think it would go well with many hardcore gamers.

Six axis has been implemented well in various games as an auxiliary control, but making it your primary way to control games is a lousy idea.

Meh...not a fan. The Wii's motion controls are in precise at best. Hopefuly they just adapt it casually and don't make new games use it.

I thought PS3's motion control for Heavenly Sword and Folklore were actually excellent. They played a part in the game. However, Killzone 2's motion control was rediculously stupid

I think a lot of you are missing the point, I am certain that nobody is after the mninigame shake this to do this market, they are after the mouse market. If you've never pointed and killed on Call of Duty then you don't know what you're missing. If I play CoD, it's mostly on the Wii, face it, a PS3 controller is shit for that task!

I think the problem is that most devs tried to take the shakeit thing too far, and, well, look what we have. There are lots of lessons that were learned from the Wii control scheme, which is exactly why others are looking to get their slice of the pie, it won't be bad at all, I look forward to it.

I'd be for them coming out with more motion control if it actually was accurately responsive to what you were doing. The thing the p*sses me off most about the Wii and it's motion sensing is that it's always off to what I'm actually doing. This shows up more on games where doing a certain motion with the Wiimote results in a different action. For example, Bleach Shattered Blade works on three different attacks in a rock-paper-scissors mentallity. One is a chop, which is when you go up and down, the slash from side to side, and the stab which is from front to back. A chop beats a slash, slash beats stab, and stab beats chop. Most moves are tied specifically to one movement, and one ends up being greater than the other with the previous system. The thing about it though, the stupid Wiimote can never seem to recognize what you're actually doing, and will end up doing something completely different. This forces you to position your arm in an awkward position (with your palm up, resting the Wiimote on top) just so it can recognize it correctly (most of the time), which gets really annoying. So if they're just going to put on some shoddy motion controls like those from the Wii, then I'd rather they just keep the money they'd have invested in it and research something more productive.

Yeah i agree that all games don't HAVE to use motion control, I think one of Nintendo's problems was the design of the wiimote as standard controller (when sideways - it's missing like half the number of buttons as a 360 or ps3 controller).  I think the 360 and ps3's current designs are so integral in their image, they won't drop them for another, so a motion control unit would probably be s separate controller.

But how I see as this as a good thing, is that the competition may make this better and work on the feedback that gamers have shown. Yeah the imprecise responses are really annoying, but the technology is 2 or 3 years old now, thats why I have hope another company can improve on it.

The introduction of motion control for the 360 and PS3 are bound to fail...The install bases are too large already for any single game to be motion-control dependent, and I think that most gamers aren't interested in motion control (outside of the Wii).  M$ and $ony won't be selling any new systems with motion control, so this whole situation is just downright sad.  I can't wait to see Wii-rehashes languishing on even more store shelves.

Bad idea, I can't stand the tech demo machine that is the Wii. The more I try to play it the less I like it. We don't need anything else with motion sensing controls. Sony's SiXAXIS control was just painful. We don't need M$ following suit or Sony rehashing their motion sensing control.
