I recently requested a DVD only of the game The Witcher. I always go for full package but for some reason I forgot to select that this time. I'm having some issues with this game as a CD/DVD only package.

I recieved the DVD which has caused an issue of me not being able to register the game to download the Enhanced Edition patch for this game. So I figured I'd just play the vanilla version. It loads up plays the intro movie then brings me to the main menu. I go to start a new game it loads up then immediately crashes and gives me an error message. I don't know what to do about it.

My computer is more than equipped to run this game above min settings.

I'm not sure if I can even give negative feedback for this, not that I even want to. The game arrived within 3 days. Good condition for a CD only package. It's just that the box has the damn serial number I need to register the game which is making it unplayable at the moment.

It's unplayable. I'm not sure if that's because I've failed to do something correctly or because it's a CD/DVD only package. But I don't feel that should lose points and a trade credit for a game that isn't playable.

If anyone has any information on how I could get this specific game to run and the proper selection of feedback I'd greatly appreciate it.

If the game installs and you can get to the main menu, it's probably not a problem with the game, but rather your system. Have you tried the regular patch (v1.3)?

Also, what are your system specs?

Edit: maybe try contacting the seller and seeing if he still has the box/CD key too.

I'll try installing that patch. Hopefully it doesn't prompt me to register.

I messaged him 3-4 days ago when we got matched up asking if he had the full package. He said that the CD he got came with a video card or something to that effect. Either way he was adamant about not having anymore than the CD.

I just ran PC Wizard. I am not familiar with any more of the basics of computer hardware but that popular "Can you run it?" website said I could run it so I feel confidant.

Anyway here is what PC Wizard says!

I tried the above patch and didn't really solve my problem. It added some extra features, but I still can't start a new game.

Also - are you running 32-bit or 64-bit WinXP?

I never had a crash on Witcher standard or EE, so I can't draw any knowledge t help.  But generally if it installs correctly the issue isn't something on the DVD.

OEM copies of games typically come with the cd-key as a sticker sealing the dvd's case.

However as others have said, registering the game won't help you get into the game.

Probably an obvious answer but have you tried dropping the settings down to minimum? (low res etc.)

If that doesn't work, try reinstalling it...its possible you have a corrupt installation.

Well even if I can give neg feedback he I wouldn't. He did everything he could do, including trying to help through email. Nice guy.

Anyway, to whom ever asked I use 64bit XP. I have dropped all the video settings down to the minimum settings. Nothing has resolved.  It's quite a pain as I've been dying to play this game. I'll try reinstalling it to see if that fixes anything.

Hmmm ... I checked and the game is noted to have issues on Vista 64 but WinXP 64 is 'certified compatible' on the GfW site.

So, Atari was nice enough to send me a registration key. I registered the game and it all went fine. But now when I go to install the Enhanced Edition patch I get this error message.

"Cannot install microsoft .net framework 3.0" What the hell does that mean, and how do I fix it?

So, I figured out the previous problem. Downloaded the .net.3.5 or whatever it's called and it solved the problem of not being able to install the EE. Still can't run the game though. However it seems the moment I fix one problem I get one new one.

My newest problem is actually installing the EE patch. It installs fine up until it says it's going to "Modify your game files." It then starts installing then down the line tells me the following.

Error 109: Failed to patch the file: Z:\The Witcher\Data\dialogues.00bif

Error 109: Failed to patch the file Z:\The Witcher\Data\cutscenes00.bif

The Witcher Enhanced Edition - Actualization Pack - Install Wizard: The Witcher is not installed properly. Cannot be patched.

The most annoying thing about this is every time it fails to patch The Witcher, I have to completely reinstall the vanilla The Witcher. Anyone seen similar problems or can point me to a solution?

Trying my hardest to play this game so I can tell myself I didn't waste 500 points and a trade credit.
