..from me, at least.

What would you think if you received a CD copy of a free game when you open up the game you ordered from the site?

I'm a huge fan of a fairly old multiplayer PC FPS game called Starseige Tribes. In an attempt to spur a renewed interest and bring in a few new players, I've been considering putting a copy of this game in every game I ship out. If you received such a thing, would you try it?

Do you think that this is an acceptable idea, or would people be cautious before running an unknown CD?

This game was release for free download some time ago, so there are no copyright infringement issues that I am aware of in copying and distributing this game for free. I just think people would be more likely to give it a try if they could just toss it into their CD drive and play it and not have to download and install it.

Comments?

Thanks!

I can't really argue against a free game, but I don't know how many people would actually be into it.  I personally loved Tribes, and will take it one step further, I loved Starsiege, the original, one of my all time favorite PC games.  It was the first game I ever modded.

Good idea, but I wouldn't try the disc in case it's a virus.  If I were you, I'd send the disc and a letter sayign what it is.  And put on the letter telling them to go to a certain URL to download it from there if they don't trust the disc.  Also explain why you're doing this.  Just a bit of advice, because I wouldn't trust it and this would be what I'd want to know about the disc if I received it.

I totally agree.

Yes, I would include a full description of the CD and its contents and my purpose in sending it along with the game. It'd be up to them to decide if they want to chance it, and I could include some links they can try out instead.

I do this for the love of my game! Greatest online FPS I'll ever know!

Despite some problems you'd have to get around, this a really cool idea.

Good luck.

Thanks for the positive feedback!

I'll be putting together a new-user friendly package of this game with updated graphics and a variety of helpful scripts, and including a copy with games I mail out!

So if you get one, please give it a shot; I always love to see new players!

Good lord, I remember Tribes. I haven't played that since middle school. Good memories.

So long as you put in there what the game is and the fact that it is a freely available download you are just adding in as a bonus, it should be ok.  Of course, I have no idea about the liability if something *does* happen to someone's system based on using the disc you make and supply ...

Bad idea.  Just because Starsiege is available for free download does not mean you are licensed to make copies of it.

This EULA still limits you to installing it on your one PC, and prohibits copying.

I'd probably toss it.  I don't mean to sound like an ass who would disrespect the effort you made, but I mean I like to think this community is pretty gaming savvy.  For the most part we know what we want, and months before it's released.

If I wanted that game, I'd have it, especially for free.  The fact that its kept off my radar is testament to my lack of interest.

On the other hand, I'm sure theres people who would enjoy that game.  If so, they're probably well aware of it.

Perhaps a little note in the envelope, linking someone to the downloadable client?  I could be in the complete minority with my opinion, and then you'd still be sharing without making copies.
