What is the best video game mechanic that you would like to see used more often In games of today? Z-targeting anyone? Don't be afraid to go back to the 16-bit bit days also.

Despite his choice in baseball teams, I have to tip my hat to bosoxfan for his legendary reply.

The problem with good game mechanics is that, when somebody does it well, it appears everywhere and you get tired of it.  It's especially bad when the derivative implementations aren't even as good as the original.

Case in point: Max Payne.  The "bullet time" mechanic made me poo myself the first time I saw it.  Now, every game - platformers, racing games, shooters, cooking simulators, etc. - have some sort of fancy slowdown effect in it somewhere.

Even the puns are wrong on this one. Cid is by far the best video game mechanic.

Aye, but the down arrow let you skip huge tracts of land.

That would be bad if that made it into mainstream gaming, Duddy07 and G-Nitro would dominate.  Kevlar51 has some amazingly quick fingers which he demonstrated in Castle Crashers...makes me wonder if he secretly practices with H-games.

Hmm...  mind control has been pretty fun in just about every game I've seen it used in - which is a grand total of two.  Half of what made Oddworld fun was being able to screw around with the guards that way.

Not sure if this would count, but being able to attack multiple people using the right analog stick in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time.
