Webspider:

Just because it's your opinion doesn't mean you can say whatever you want.

It really does, actually.

Webspider:

If you are going to give your opinion on something and try to get people not to try it at least bring in some valid points.

If you can bring in the valid points of it's good, and you like it, he can just as easily use the valid points of he does not care for it.  He also gave 3 valid reasons for his opinion, whether you agree with them or not does not make them less valid.

I agree with him on this, as I played Earthbound new, and was far from impressed.  Yes, I felt like I was playing a kiddie game.  I don't think we're alone in this opinion, since another one's never been released stateside after the numbers earthbound pulled.

On the other hand, there are many who worship this game, thinking it to be about the greatest rpg ever.

Both are valid opinions with valid points to be found.

I loved Earthbound. I rented it more times than the game was worth, but I could never find it to buy (until recently and I'm not paying that much money for it). I would gladly buy some Wii points to play through it again. I played through the game multiple times and loved it everytime.

As for the OP. I did find it on a ROM site a few years ago and was playing it via an Emulator on my PC. You may want to check that avenue if you are really wanting it badly. I don't remember the site, maybe cherryroms.com if that place is still up. All the sites I used were free too, so happy hunting.

Exactly.  I love FFVII (I'd say at one time it was the best rpg I'd played, but not the best ever), but it's ok that some folks don't like it.

Special people get to play earthbound on the wii.  But that topic is against forum rules.

*Fails to resist urges* I shall bring in my points on why EB is good. First I would say that I used to have the same feelings toward EB as Maskim and Weapon have. I thought the game was crappy, that it had lame gameplay, dry story, etc. However, look at the Dragon Warrior games, same battle system, and people love the franchise. The most unique thing about the gameplay is the rolling HP system. It makes battles more tense. For example, if you take a mortal hit that can kill your character, if you go through the menus fast enough, you will be able to survive the battle, because you stopped the rolling meter before it reached zero. The only thing I will say is the inventory system is somewhat annoying, being that each item takes up its own slot, including multiples of the same item. however, it just means you have to use some strategy on what to carry with you, and what you don't really need. However, gameplay isn't all that important in an RPG, as much as the story is.

As for the story, sure, on the surface, the story is pretty simple and bland. However, under that surface, is actually a story that has a lot of meaning and questions to raise, and most games in the MOTHER series (As it is known in Japan) are purposely given a somewhat light story (except for MOTHER 3 on the GBA), the games are always left to personal interpretation onto reasons behind character actions in the story or endings. Its not ment to have a concrete story where everything is given to you from the get go. Its a mean for you to explore and come up with your own conclusions to things.

As for the graphics, its mean to be simplistic, its part of the charm of the game. Some like to say that EarthBound is "bright and fluffy on the outside, dark and heinous on the inside.". Essentially, the cartoony graphics will throw some people off, thinking it would be a child's game with story material related to a child's state of mind. However, this isn't the case. The undertone themes of the story are very dark and grim, and that most of the story really isn't light hearted as the graphics appear it to be. Don't judge a book by its cover. The book may have a kiddie cover, but the story inside could be dark and grim.

Finally, the real reason most become fans is this simple reason: Atmosphere.

The quirky atmosphere, (such as hitting a hippie with a baseball bat, hitting aliens with a frying pan, and shooting a bottle rocket at a giant pile of barf) the zany lines, the weird humor that makes you go "WTF", is the backbone of the game and series. The only game series, where I play soley because of the atmosphere. Its the type of game that probably won't "Click" with most people the first time around, but it eventually will, provided you have a good sense of humor, and maybe a bit of a kid in your heart. :)

I recommend you give it a second chance, it might just "click" with you this time.

I thought EarthBound was pretty good...  when I played it about half a year ago I only got halfway through it, but I enjoyed it as much as any of the other big-name RPGs that I played for the Snes.  The gameplay was fine as far as I'm concerned.  The story was kinda *meh*, but was at least somewhat original in that it was placed in a real world setting.  Also, the music was great.

I find it funny that you label it as a "kiddie RPG" Maskim.  I thought it was just as "kiddie" in substance as say Final Fantasy IV, or Chrono Trigger.  Both games that I enjoy - and will continue to enjoy well into adulthood.

Very nice summary Scarface. I love Earthbound because of the random and sporadic humor, the gameplay is quite basic but fun and very addictive. EB is highly orginal. I would love to see a remake for DS or Wii sequel, a port no, not really, isn't there a GBA port anyway?

I think the same people that translated Mother 3 are translating the Mother 1+2 GBA port but i am not sure.I can't say too much since it's against forums rules.Anyway Google is your friend.

I love those games.  Cool

Anyways, to elaborate, I labeled the game as kiddie many years ago not because of the cartoonish graphics, but because I found game play to be simplistic and the story to be uninvolving and bland.   It just didn't draw me in at all.  Who it did draw in, though?  My then 10 year old brother.  Many people I knew, and have met since, have had similar experiences where younger siblings enjoyed the game much more than they did.

It just wasn't my cup of tea.  I'm not about to belittle anyone for liking it, because it's all just personal taste.  Since I didn't care for it though, I can't recommend it, either.

Mother 1+2 are ports, currently I am playing Earthbound via SNES emu. Like I said before I want to see a DS remake and upgraded translation.

I know that but the GBA port is only available in Japanese and the same group that translated Mother 3 are working on the GBA port of Mother 1+2.

Nintendo will never bring another Mother game stateside so fan translation is the only way.
