I think Sony made a mistake with the backwards compatibility issue. I think maybe they are looking too far ahead and forgetting what got them where they are. Seeing that the only games still produced for the PS2 are sports games, movie based games, kids games and Atlus RPG's they may be moving on, but they need to consider the huge backlog of games for the PS2 and those whom still have yet to experience them. That's a pretty sad deal.

I agree that they handled the BC poorly.  I'd love to have it on mine, but I made the jump too late.  The main reasons being the upscaling and wireless controller.  Both my TV's are limited with available inputs and having to unplug something to plug in the PS2 when I want to fire it up is a little much for me.

Well, my stance was that I was not getting a PS3 until they bring back BC.  However, my girlfriend discovered Little Big Planet via the intarwebs and was immediately enthralled with the concept.  Guess what I was sent out to Target in the freezing ice and snow for?  Stick out tongue

At least with the exception of Little Big Planet, I plan on buying all my accessories and games used.  So negative for the console, positive for the game, Sony should simply break even on me.

I shed a tear on your behalf.

man I totally agree with that. The price drop wouldn't even be needed for me, I'd buy one for the current price.... If it had BC

That no longer applies to the PS3. They have plenty of games. In fact more games came out this season than I have been able to play.

Metal Gear 4, LittleBigPlanet, Resistance.

Those are all that interest me, great games that I'm willing to put extra money for the PS3. Biggest reason for the PS3 in my eyes though were Blu-Ray and PS2 compatibility.

OK, first of all I have a small issue with the whole PS3 part breakdown:  Sony isn't paying retail price for the parts.

In fact, Sony is one of the world largest electronics manufacturers, and believe me they aren't selling anything at a loss.

About the backwards compatability issue with newer PS3's, I bought one of the cheaper models with no backwards compatability.  The cost for buying a used ps2 from a pawn shop or the like is trivial compared to buying a higher tier PS3 with either special hardware or software emulation.

PS2s are still the most played console in the world.

Personally, I think that having a console with backwards compatability is a cop out.

Who still has a functional XBOX?  Howabout a functional PS2?

My PS2 has a deep gouge in the disk tray lid (a dvd stand fell on top of it) and it still plays like a champ, unfortunately my XBOX has gone through about 3 DVD drives and doesn't work now.

Backwards compatability is M$'s solution to failing cheap hardware.

If you want to play PS2 games, go buy a PS2, they're incredibly cheap and last forever.  Personally, I'd prefer Sony to keep working on their newest system instead of trying to fix what isn't broken.

I have a ps2 but I would prefer to play my ps2 games on my ps3.  Backwards compatability is a must for any newer system.  I do not currently have my ps2 hooked up to my tv as I dont have enough inputs and refuse to switch back and forth just so I can play games that should be playable on my ps3.  By your standards the ps3 shouldnt support psx games which would be crap.  I am currently playing Final Fantasy VII & VIII as well as Star Ocean on my ps3.  By what you are saying I should also get a psx so that I can play these games.

Backwards compatability is a huge deal in the gaming industry and sony is loosing out on sales of their ps3 due to their removale of BC.

It's also the fact that I have so much plugged up to my TV, I can't have something else to swap out.

You all are suffering from "too much stuff" syndrome.  Don't PSX games play on the PS2?  My 100$ Wal-Mart television has ports on the front that I use for my PS3, and the PS2 and Dreamcast are both daisy-chained to the coaxial cable in the back.  Heck, there is even ANOTHER set of component video ports on the back.

As for the real  tv,  its got 2 HDMI ports, which DOES annoy me, and like 3 component video ports on the back.  The cable box and the upscaling dvd player are taking both the HDMI ports, so if anything I just need to buy another cable or a HDMI switch box.

Or buy a component video switch box.

I still think what isn't broken, shouldn't be fixed.  If you just have too many things plugged in, that's your fault, not Sony's.

Why would I want to play on a 15 inch tv when I have a 40" LCD HDTV?

Yes they do but by your logic of the ps3 not needing BC then the ps2 shouldnt have it either.

It is broken.  Sony said they would make all ps3's BC and then changed their mind.  Having to hook another system up to my tv that is lacking on inputs because I already have 4 other systems + satelite + reciever is something that I consider broken since they said the ps3 would be BC.

Its 20" and it suits me just fine when I want to relax in the bedroom.

PS3 doesn't need BC because its cheaper to just get a used PS2, which already is BC with PSX.

Sony adapted their marketing scheme because the vast majority of the market doesn't really want to play Custer's Last Crusade Fantasy XVII on their HDTV.  (no offense to the Final Fantasy series, I love 'em  :P  )

Weren't all PS3's BC at first?  Then in an attempt to make them available to more users, they dropped BC to lower the price.

If you want extra features, you have to pay for them.  Sorry if you feel ripped off, no one forced you to buy the cheaper version.

When I purchased my ps3 they were no longer making backwards compatible ones.  Sony could solve their problems easily by introducing software emulators for the ps3 to make all of them BC.

I dont see why someone wouldnt want to play old generation games on an hdtv with upscaling through the ps3.  I think this has inspired me to start a poll on peoples opinions on BC for the ps3.

Exactly.  I would have paid for those "extra features", but when I went to buy a PS3 they weren't available.
