As I mentioned on Goozcast #17, I was going to try running a Marathon barefoot.  Despite this obviously being a very bad idea, I went ahead with the attempt and lived to tell about it.  My final time was 5:19:59, which is not very fast but I wasn't really trying for any specific goal.  There isn't any photographic evidence yet (my parents took some pictures but I think they're on actual film), I do have the official results of my race time (edit: no direct link, but if you search for #1110 in the marathon it will come up).

Anyway, the main thing that I learned from this experience is that running is a lot less fun than playing video games, and if you have a choice between the two you should always pick gaming.  At least with the power pad you could just press it with your hands and get the world record really easily...

Now available, photo evidence! Big Smile

Congrats on completing the marathon, and barefoot too.

Congrats though, I can't even run a mile without being extremely tired. Running is my least favorite thing to do, ever, next to washing dishes by hand and stabbing my groin.

Impressive. I'd love to run a marathon. I'm sure someday I will. I will likely do it with shoes though. Did you train without shoes or just say f#@k it and run it without them one-off. The best I can do right now is about 15Km (9.32 miles)

Yeah, I've been training barefoot for over a year now (though I got lazy/cold and quit for several months last winter), but I've done it occasionally ever since high school.  It's a huge change to go from shoes to barefoot - since you have a different stride it uses slightly different muscles.  When I first started I was sore after just a few miles, a whole marathon would be terrible Ick!

If you're already able to run 15k, you'd definitely be able to do a marathon if you started training for it in advance.  It gets pretty brutal towards the end but if you're in good shape it's not so bad, especially if you're not trying to keep a certain pace.

Big congrats. How difficult was the barefoot part? You beat up your feet badly?

Nope, the worst thing that happened was I stubbed my big toe on mile 7 or so because there was a root growing under the pavement and I didn't see the bump.  Other than that I had no cuts or blisters or anything.
