A few days ago my mother in-law asked me if I heard of this site Pandora for playing music. She said that when she was getting a tattoo done, the lady doing it was using the site and she said it was pretty cool. I decided to check it out yesterday and I like it a lot.

Basically its an online radio. You put in an artist or song you like and it finds similar songs and artists and just plays music. You can have up to 100 different songs and artists. The best part about it is if they play a song you don't like you can click on a "thumbs down" icon and they'll never play that song again. I was a little leary about it at first because when she said it "plays songs similar to the one's you like" I was thinking of indy bands or something like that, but it plays all named bands, its a great tool for listening to music. I highly recommend it to anyone. You guys should check it out, its a completely free service to boot!

I tried to check it out but I ran into issues because I'm in Canada.  (not the thread, but Pandora)

many reports of it closing down. I too like the service

Too bad we can't roll some of the tax dollars into free services like this. My dentist had this running, too bad it was a straight marathon of chicks singing but cool either way.

I love the service. It has opened the door to many new artists I would never of heard of. It is still running today, lets hope it stays that way.

I used to use it but I find Fire.fm is a lot better. It is similar to Pandora except it creates a "radio station" based on whatever artist you type in. The good part is if you want to listen to something completely different, you just type it in.

I have two problems with these sites personally:

- Can't use them from work

- Never have enough breadth of what I like

So I use net radio sites that I can grab through iTunes since the company allows that.  There is actually a good selection for my funky avant-garde tastes.

well txa there is an oline service called live365radio.com that i know runs through Windows Media Player and i think it does itunes too, but its like radio stations and i remeber seeing a good amount of jazz section so it might be worthy of a look at.

I could be wrong, but isn't that exactly what Pandora does? I type in either an artist or song, and it creates a radio station that delivers music similar to that artist or song. In addition, it keeps track of the thumbs up or thumbs down ratings I give the songs that come up. The longer you have a station and the more you rate the songs, the more the station plays exactly what you want to hear. It is awesome.

There is no playlist. You just type in a name of a band. It plays music similar to that band. If you want to listen to something completely different, you just type in the name of another band. You don't need to create a new playlist and you don't need to rate music.

I was lucky enough to have the founder come and talk to our school. He did mention hard times and a possibility of it shutting down, mainly due to the new legislation that makes all internet radio pay higher premiums than say... satellite radio. That might get repealed though.

Either way, I used last.fm - I recommend it!

With  Fire.fm, you don’t need to create playlists, you just type in a name of a band, it plays similar music. If you want to listen to something completely different or you don’t like what you’re hearing you just type in a new band name. You don’t have to create a new playlist and you don’t need to rate music.

Lol, funny this should come up, as I am listening to one of my pandora stations right now.  I love this site for music, and have been using for over a year and a half now....highly recommend to anyone looking for some new music.
