Shady:
"casual" people out there who buy wii's and apple products (yes, im saying you are being hypocrite!)

You are making judgments about Apple products and the reasons I buy them.  Incorrect ones, at that.

RPGCodex did a 'post-mortem' on Oblivion where they took the words that the Bethesda guys used repeatedly in previews and interviews and analyzed the game based on that ... with hilarious results.

With Fallout 3 they have repeatedly talked about making sure the game satisfied the hardcore gamer and hardcore Fallout fan.  And in many ways they have done that ...but these minor interface issues are just poor design that are clearly not in line with efficient design or being friendly to hardcore PC or Fallout fans.

Shady - I don't think you have a clue about PC gaming,  because the alteration I'm talking about would be like the X360 version forcing you to push up on the d-pad then use the analog stick.  It is changing a single-step process into a multi-step process.

It's about time they ported a game to the PC.  I mean, PC's are inferior technology compared to today's consoles Big Smile

actually you have stated that you love apple and the wii for it's ease of use and casual people friendly in the past, while being able to still cater to the more specialized people.

Again bethseda did try to cater to hardcore fans but is that all they tried catering to? the answer is a blantant no with the direction they took the game, they tried to make the game a game for everybody, which includes hardcore games, casual gamers, and the indifferent people.

okay i might have a wrong idea about this, do you have to hold tab the whole time or just push it once? if it's once i know what your talking about and the 360 users have to press the "b" button then they cycle through the options in the chosen category with the left sick and to change the category we have to hit the "rt" button.

again though this is bringing me back to the casual gamer argument and not that the blame for these "poor" desicions to fall on the back of console gamers in general. just to reiterate, don't you think for a casual gamer who doesn't know or want to memorize all the buttons that it wouldn't be inconviable for them to want to learn as few as they can and click their way to bliss?! i know the 360 version has an option where you can map your buttons have you tried this in the settings area or is this missing from the pc version. i used to be addicted to quite a few pc games like the original fallouts and BG2: SoA & ToB and other such games as MoH and WoW.

I believe you're referring to this topic?

But yeah, after actually playing this game for more than 3 hours, it's starting to get a little monotonous. I understand it's part of the game, but I just can't stand the fact that I'm always inside or underground! I need fresh air! (Don't comment on the "irony," I get plenty of outdoor time in a day)

You are three hours in and still underground? You have to be almost out, dude.

OK, hoping to get some actual Fallout discussion in here ...

My second article is now up here:

That ties in to Fallout 3 due to the whole ‘Fallout 3 is Oblivion with guns’ thing. Yeah, in some ways it is … but make no mistake: Fallout 3 is a real, hard-core RPG, and one that ranks up with some of the better ones of the last few years. Again I am pulling back from the frothing hype of lines like ‘… as close to perfection as any game ever made’, as there are flaws falling like rain throughout the game. But from the minute you enter MegaTon (really before, but it didn’t matter then) you will see skill checks and choices with consequences everywhere. In short, a solid hardcore RPG.

I just want to say, from reading your reviews, and being about 10 hours in myself I can definitely say it definitely seems like you 'get' the game.

Definitely my favorite dialogue bits so far have been the Survival Quests, which I saw you mentioned. I especially like that most often you can select between a charisma option which is more funny, or an intelligence option, which is still funny in it's overexagerated way.

By the way, did Moira remind anybody else of a character played by Nicole Sullivan from Mad TV?

The things I notice in Fallout 3 are the little things that just make it so much more fun to play than most RPGs. One thing I notice is how just about every quest rewards with something that will be useful forever. When I got a strength boost from the Those! quest I got so excited. Oddly enough I had the crap scared out of me a lot in that quest. One where I was looking for the 'package' that was mentioned in a holo tape in the ticket booth. I opened a door and I fi- HOLY $^#! SCIENTIST! Then after I found the package (I won't spoil this for anyone) I got a kick out of the dialogue. I got jumped right on that transition from light to dark, so as someone ran up to me they just kind of sprang up real fast looking, and I was aware from seeing them move in the dark...then someone shoves a gun in your face it can be kind of unnerving.

Just that I have said so much already is really a testament to the design of the game.

The sig I made

It may not actually be as close to perfection as I stated earlier txa, but it's pretty damned good.  From the instant you customize the character's look, to the first time you pick someone's pocket, and drop a frag mine in there, to each little decision.  I love this game.

There's only been two times when I've felt it was 'Oblivion with guns', when sitting on a bench, and when waking sleeping characters to speak with them.  The rest of the time, I've been so entrenched in the wasteland, that the thought hasn't even come to mind.  It may be the same engine as Oblivion, but it's definately it's own game.

Over all, I think your review is fair.  I think I like the system more than you, but I'm playing on my 360, not on a computer.

Having played computer games for years and loving consoles as well, I'm going to jump into this little fray.

I, M, and C keys are as common to computer RPG's as wasd is to movement on a PC, or using the mouse to look around in a fps.  Imagine mapping the XYAB buttons on the xbox 360 to looking around instead of the right thumbstick.  For MOST pc players, that is what asking them to go through multiple menus to get to something is like.

Hardcore is Falcon 4.0, with all the keyboard keys having a function, plus key-combinations.

It's not too much to ask for some simple shortcuts to character, inventory and map screens for the pc version.  Casual PC players (less than 10 hours a week) like myself would appreciate it just as much as the 'hardcore' txa.  It's just a matter of expecting them to understand the needs of the audience.  For instance, ever notice how annoying it is to control a console dvd player with a gamepad controller?  MUCH easier to use a remote; less time too.

Let's see I used the decent Gamestop promotion to get it for ps3.  I liked number 2 alot and I was hoping for more of the "in your face, I'm not using magic and no elves" RPG.  I like Fallout 3 so far, I'm about 3 hrs in, and I'm on my way to the 2nd town.  The aimed shots are cool and the perks and character development is deep enough.

I did not like Oblivion and I was afraid I wouldn't like Fallout 3, so far so good.  Nothing like getting a critical headshot...toasty!!!.  I wish you could play as a super mutant...

Head-to-head (PC, 360 and PS3 versions)

http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/926/926646p1.html

If you don't want to read the article here's the final verdict:

Overall
There's no question that the PC wins this Head-to-Head with the most fully featured, best looking, and best running version of Fallout 3. If you have both a 360 and PS3 I would recommend going with a copy of the game on Xbox but the differences aren't drastic enough to warrant the purchase of new hardware. The PS3 version is still a great buy.

Overall
1. PC
2. 360
3. PS3

txa - if you didn't like the control scheme you should have hooked up a 360 controller to your PC Wink

Did you read my second article ... I actually did hook up my X360 controller and found that while I prefer the kybd & mouse for everything else, it was clear that the interface design for the PIPBoy was done to facilitate ease of operation from a controller.

And as someone else said, if they ported a PSP game to X360 and made you use the ABXY buttons to look instead of the right analog stick and wouldn't allow you to reconfigure the controls you would say it was bad design, but if they allowed reconfiguration then it would just be an unfortunate choice and everyone would fix it - or not if they decided to leave it alone.  Similarly, they could so easily have given both choices of control schemes and satisfied everyone.

Not to belabor the point, but since Fallout is (absolutely and inarguably) a 'classic PC franchise' that is very beloved by a group that can only be described as 'hardcore RPG fans', making a control design decision that specifically and irreversably excludes the 10+ year old gaming habits of the core audience of the franchise you are building a sequel for ... ?
