Unless you just want to play games ... then you get a mid-range PC. Big Smile

Sure, a Mac might look prettier when you're sending an email, listening to iTunes, or just surfing the web, but if you want to experience the real online world, then get out of your iBubble. Get a PC.Wink

Hrmm... the "real online world." I guess you're just not 'keepin it real' until the porn you thought you downloaded ends up being a trojan the day your preinstalled version of Norton decides to expire, huh?

Actually, I personally prefer having a stable unix foundation, nifty features like a multitouch trackpad, and cool emerging technologies like ipv6. I have a PS3 for games.

Of course, I will be able to play Starcraft II on my Mac, in 2013 or whenever... so it's still all good.

So you MUST agree then that consoles are for kiddies and if you want REAL gaming you have a PC?  Right?  Because EVERYTHING you just said applies to consoles as well ...

Unless of course you are a mindless hypocritical troll.  Pretty binary choice.

Or you are all just a bunch of flaming idiots. Tandy FTW!

This may sound fanboy-ish (and therefore non logical), but even as coworkers and friends all tell me to try out a Mac, or iPhone, iPod, anything Apple as they think I'd love it, I refuse to on principle.  I agree Apple makes fantastic software and a great interfaces, but their ad campaign making PC users look retarded does not sit well with me.  Yes my parents may be in that crowd, but I'm not.  While I love checking out my friends' Apple products, but I will remain stubborn on this and never give them any of my money until they retire their ad direction.  I can get everything I want on my PCs and non Apple MP3 players and phones.

And PS, how the hell does a one button mouse work?

You'd be surprised how rarely people actually right-click during normal (non-gaming) usage. It's just not terribly necessary, and when it is, there are alternatives. (ctrl+click, or on a laptop, two fingers+click, which is fairly seamless)

I couldn't imagine browsing the internet after going back to a mouse without a mouse 3 button.

No savvy PC user would fall for that, and more than likely wouldn't use norton, they'd use one of the many free superior virus programs like AVG, trend micro, etc. The only real threat to someone who checks their file extensions and doesn't run random attachments are pirated, cracked executables.

Did people forget USB and Bluetooth mice?  The Mac trackpad is wonderfully large and functional - certainly nicer than on my Dell, HP or Lenovo (ok the Lenovo is a netbook so it gets a pass ;) ).  But I generally use either my Apple BlueTooth 'mightmouse' which has two 'buttons', scrolling and third button through the scroll.  I also tend to use my Microsoft Intellimouse USB since it has 5 buttons - the two thumb buttons are invaluable for the Jedi Knight games 'push' and 'pull'.

I right click all the time, and it's on the Apple mouse. Just because it looks like one button doesn't mean it's only one button.

Most Mac users I know admit that they didn't know what they were missing before the "right click" came to Macs.

The last Mac I used resembled the model that the aquarium was built out of, and I've never been terribly impressed since.  I don't know if they're bashable, but I know I can build what I want for a fraction of the cost with PC, and with the knowhow, generally trouble free.

I too dislike the 'PC users are stupid' ad campaign, though admittedly in IT, I see that it is an accurate blanket-assumption for the majority.  Still, I'd contest that PC is where it's at for all but the most trendy.  Why deal with the middle man of 'My mac can run Windows X' when I can just straight run Windows X myself?

And I dont think it's fair to have Vista be the reason to shy away from PCs.  I don't know many in the tech biz that DID like Vista.   7 is looking to be a bit better, but I'm still having the occassional problem; to be expected 2 months before release.  There's always the beloved XP though.

The Iphone looks neat though.  I may get one of those if they ever drop AT&T (rumor says they may).

I switched over to mac a few years ago, in part because of XP and in part because of Dell (which I viewed as a general lack of PC hardware quality control).  XP's certainly not a bad OS, but it had gotten to the point that I was reinstalling it about every 8 months just so it would run correctly. I'm sure this was due to the amount of crap I put on there. And I'm sure a lot of it also had to do with the string of crappier and crappier Dell computers (and Dell replacement parts) I'd been getting over the previous 6 years.

By that point, the Apple-centric quality control was a very attractive feature. I was really drawn to the fact that the company that produced the hardware also designed the OS (to run specifically with that hardware). And I've been very happy in that respect--OS X is incredibly stable, and I've had only had a relatively minor issue with my MBP come up (problem running external monitor while laptop closed), and so Apple replaced my 2-year-old computer with a brand new one. So all in all I've been very happy.

PieMonster:

Mac's are kind of like AOL - they're great introductory machines/services if you're new to computers. They put you in a safe bubble, but once you're ready to experience the "real" world, it's time upgrade to a PC.

PieMonster, I expected better from you. You speak like a Mac-hater lemming.

I agree that people that buy them for trendiness are stupid - but for someone like me who does a heavy amount of video editing and graphical work, you can't beat a Mac. It is pretty much the opposite of what you're saying - PCs are great introductory machines, but when you're ready to work professionally with much more stable software and hardware built for what you're doing, it's time to upgrade to a Mac.

Hrm... saavy. You're giving the average Windows user waaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much credit.

For the record, I've been building PC's since I was like 9 and my dad brought home a DOS clone. I've been working in IT/IS on and off for the past 10 years... laid off at the moment, though. At some point I got the brilliant idea of doing some independent consulting, advertising on craigslist, helping some friends of friends for a bit of cash. I don't envy people who work with Geek Squad. I don't even know how some of those machines even got to the point they were at... like... what were you thinking when you already had 7 search bars for IE, and you said "Yes" to add an 8th? Not to mention the excruciating wait of watching a 6 month old machine take 15 minutes to boot into Vista. And, I can't count the number of times I've had to remove an expired, preinstalled Norton 90 day trial and replace it with avast! or something.

Now, if you're a PC gamer, it's a different story. I'm not about to recommend a $2500 Mac Pro to someone who just wants to play TF2 and surf the web. And, if you're happy with Windows, or see yourself as a Windows "power user" that's dandy. But if you haven't used a Mac, or understand just how fast, capable, and configurable MacOS X is... all you're doing is spouting hearsay, and the reiterating the same arguments that are pretty much 15 years old now.

Mac users like you are nice and informative. Welcome to 2009.

If others were wondering as I was: while it appears that there is only one button, there are two, just that they are hidden under one shell (why, I don't know).

I think this comment best summarizes my feelings on apple. For years apple has been calling ME an idiot because I choose to use their competitor's product. This is really no way to run a respectable business. I'm also shocked at how Mac users actually believe the lies and exaggerations apple throws out about Windows and PCs. It makes Mac users just a bunch of mindless iClones. I have no shame in tossing that negative energy back on to apple.

And just for the record, I also own a 17" G5 iMac which I use for Final Cut so I'm free to throw the insults as I please.Cool

So wait let me get this straight, owning an iMac, and apparently disliking the platform and/or the company justifies you insulting Mac users on Goozex?

Personally, I think it's fairly impressive that you're still able to use a 5 year old machine for video editing. That's another one of the advantages of a Mac... the OS is so well optimized for the hardware, machines tend to last and/or be useful a hell of alot longer than a comparable Windows box. MacOS updates tend to speed up older systems... my MacBook Pro is only 18 months old, but after installing Snow Leopard it screams compared to how it ran under Leopard. A friend of mine's 2006 iMac had a similar result.

Of course, the flipside of that is that if you're basing your opinion on 5 year old technology or a 5 year old OS... your opinion isn't necessarily current. I'd hope you're at least running 10.5 Leopard on that thing.
