Do you think Sony should keep backwards compatibility in the PS3 and how important do you think it is?
I failed to jump on the ps3 soon enough and am stuck with the 40G model

I think it is absurd that on such an expensive piece of gaming hardware that they tossed compatibility.

I think it is if only for the fact that that the PS2 has a big as install base as it does. People are still releasing worthwhile PS2 games and I think there are another couple of years in it.
I used to think it was, and I still don't have a PS3 so I'm not sure how it would effect me... but I have to say even with all of my old original Xbox games I have yet to play ONE on my 360.
I know for a lot of other people it matters, and it seems like it isn't something too hard to implement for the payoff. Its kind of an extra gift to your users, and if you treat your users well they'll buy more of your product - if not... then..

since tuesday afternoon, at least two people did not buy a PS3 solely because of the lack of BC on the new 80 gb at the best buy where i work.
To me, yes...a great deal.

Yes, very much so. It's a simple matter of conveniance. All that Sony would succeed at, would be pissing off their potential customers. So they're just shooting themselves in the foot... again.
While I think backwards compatibility is an important feature, I really have not found myself going back and playing a lot of PS2 games. I think this is going to continue to decrease as more and more quality games come out for the system as well.
Considering I have traded away the few ps3 games I owned, but still have PS2 games, yes BC is important. Good thing I have a 60 GB
i dont think its important but im glad i have it
The dumbest questions I have ever seen. No joke. what do you think? yeah go out and buy a ps2? why would you do that? Stupid question.

A question that's easy to answer for one person can be a serious delima for another person. If the question was as truly dumb and stupid as you say then it wouldn't have gotten the thoughtful responses it has received so far. Try to be a little less abrasive in the forums.
To the OP: when I first considered getting a PS3 I thought BC was a must. But I haven't yet bought a PS3, and with my Xbox 360 and Wii I've only played 1 1/2 last gen games (Metroid Prime and the first half of Metroid Prime 2) - so if I went out and bought a PS3 right now I probably wouldn't care about BC. Yes there are some great PS2 games I missed out on, but would I probably go back and really play them? I can't even keep up with my stack of 360 games in my to-play list - not to mention the ones in my Wii to-play list.
I really enjoy the BC and the thing is is that some people don't know that depending on the PS3 (60G 80G and so on) that you can have BC. Like with the 40G if you like PS2 games your pretty much screwed over cuz it has 0% backwards compatibility. The only game you can play on a 40G that's a PS2 game is the Guitar Hero series but the thing about that is the controllers aren't compatible. So that does you no good at all. From what i know the 60G is 100% compatible with PS2 games and the 80G is somewhat compatible. But I own a 60G and I find myself playing PS2 games every so often
no not really, still have my PS2, but it is a plus.
