I was thinking it would be cool to be able to bid on games with your goozex points. There would be a seperate tab where we could bid however many points we want. It would be great for people who would pay a few extra points to bypass the lines and some games might make more or less that their set price.

yeah but then we would be going back to ebay, and we all know what thats was like.

As long as it's properly moderated, I think it would work quite well.

I think that it might only be appropriate for those games that are valued +1000 Gooz points, and from carefully selected sellers with integrity and honesty about the condition of their games.

This has been suggested before, and there are plenty of other sites that support the auction format (although obviously with funding other than Goozex points).

The beauty of Goozex lies in the automation of the system, and my personal feeling is that this would smudge that.

I agree - right now Goozex is a 'blind' system: if you have points / credits / slots, you can get a game when your turn comes up whether you are rich, poor, young, old, or whatever.  All of a sudden you would jump to a 'money changes everything' system, where normal folks are waiting much longer because others are jumping ahead with extra points to burn.

This is exactly my stance, as well.  If you want to auction for games, Ebay is beckoning.  I personally think the Goozex system is great the way it is.

I agree too, today I tried using swapadv ( I saw it mentioned on the forums here). Swapadvd's trading system is so much sloppier and harder to navigate than goozex. Goozex has a great thing going. I'm so happy I joined.

The current Goozex form is simply inefficient.

Example: Like a lot of people, I have Forza Motorsports 2 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance for the X Box 360 because they came with each of my X Boxes.  Are they worth 550 and 400 points each, if there is currently a "long wait" for each?  Hell no.  They are nearly worthless, as demonstrated by their eBay values.  Who in their right mind would give up Guitar Hero 3 like points for those crappy games?  No one.  And, as demonstrated by the 0 offers of GH3 with guitar, who would dare give up all that for just 1000 points?

If people want something, they should be able to bid it up to where they want it, and if people have something that is in demand, they should be able to get more points.  That's simple supply and demand.

The nice thing about Goozex is that there is no exchange of $, and the overhead is much lower than that of eBay from a user's perspective.

The socialist aspects of fixed prices, however, is just poor, and should be abandoned.  Let the market dictate prices, and more trades will happen.

I think the auction idea could be good if it was only implemented for games that are in very low demand. Games that more people want to trade away, than others want to trade for.  That way you could get rid of a game that nobody wants, and someone else could get a great deal on a game that they may otherwise not want.  For example, many of us have bioshock listed, but since there is not much demand for it we are sitting on it.  Putting games like this up for auction would help us to get rid of it, as well as give someone else a great game for a great deal.  They could still have some sort of turn based system where you got in line to auction your game, maybe have like 5 of each game for auction at a time.  To me this seems like a great idea, and could even increase how many people actually purchase goozex points because they would know they could get a game for cheap.

Your expert opinion after being a member for 3 days and making 0 trades?

Correct.  If this place were more efficient, I could have made 5 trades by now.  But also my expert opinion as an Economist with a Finance MBA.  So yeah, I know a few things about how markets work.  And, how they should work.

Glad to have another experienced economist among the community. I hope you stick around long enough to see that Goozex breaks the mold when it comes to the standard view of how trading economies are supposed to function. Much like eBay did for selling junk, and Amazon did for selling books (and is doing with their Kindle products), Goozex is a new take on an old market. While flawed, I think you'll find that most users find that the "flaws" are of small importance compared to how much time is saved by not having to worry about the things you'd have to in an old-style economy.

Actually that is 'free market',whereas supply and demand has more to do with the numbers that exist and how many people are willing to pay the going price. Wink

Looking at your examples, Forza shows how the 'auto-adjust' system sometimes doesn't keep up with reality: 370 'ready to trade', 0 'ready to purchase' ... with 50 on hold.  Marvel is similar ... and there are loads of other games I'm sure.  What those numbers tell me is that at 550 / 400, nobody is willing to buy.  The points should drop 50 per week until people start buying and then balance out.

That is one reason there is a 'suggested point values' thread, because there are some that just don't make sense - some too low, others too high.

But even as an economist you should understand something that drives my life as a statistician - that there is a difference between correlation and causality.  Part of why Goozex works as well as it does is that, despite being inefficient, it is a fair and level playing field.  If you were allowed to bid freely, what is to say that you wouldn't pay 25,000 points for the new Naruto game that your kid simply *has* to have?  And what does that do to the economy of Goozex?  And what should bids do to the 'standard' price - because I'd assume you'd still have to have a 'list' price even when you open up to offers?  And what about queues?  And so on.

I just don't think it is so simplistic as you posed in your 'price limits = socialism = bad' post.
