One day a long time ago in a far far away living room, I went to eject a game out of my PS2 and it wouldn't open. So I took it apart and found out that the tray's alignment rail was made of cheap plastic that gave out at a very key area for it to eject. I used to just maneuver my entire top cover on and off to put games in but this is what I've ended up resorting to.
I drilled around the top of the tray cover with a dremel and its a little less of a nightmare now to change games.
I still have to fidget with it a little to get the tray cover off but its not that bad now. I had once ordered a flip top cover off ebay but ended up getting ripped off. I never got it and the sender all of the sudden didn't have an ebay account anymore.
Someone threw away a PS2 because of the same ejection problem so I got a free PS2! I ended up doing the same thing to that one too. One for the living room, and one for the bedroom.
That s funny picture...and a common story to boot, from what I have gathered in conversations with gamers. I'm pretty lucky I suppose. I still have my launch PS2 alive and kicking. I did send it in to Sony once for something minor, but they covered everything very early in its cycle. I really can't remember what the issue was, but they gave me a call and sent me a box. When I did get it back I did notice that the disc drive tray did protrude a bit more than previous...but I didn't think anything of it, as I assumed that it just was a casualty of the shipping across the states. Anyhow, don't know if anything was actually done and can't say why I was lucky in this rather silent recall/fix, but I have never had an issue with my PS2. Granted I have never run it as a primary or even secondary DVD player.

Nice! I dig the improvised flip top.
Just the day before yesterday my slim 'limited edition (silver)' PS2 fell about 4-5 feet and hit our hardwood floor.
After placing the PS2 back on the stand from which it came, I resumed playing until the next loading screen where the screen just went black. I wasn't too surprised until I opened the flip top tray and saw that there was no disk inside! I found the game on the floor.... The PS2 fell, popped open, shot the game out, managed to close the tray, and kept working, all without even a graphical distortion!.
All hail the newly redubbed "Invincible PS2!"

Maybe its just me and thats why the 360 issues dont bother me that much. Id say over the years Ive gone through about 5 PS2's.
I just attribute it to me being a total gaming whore, nothing more. (excuse the lame unintended ryme)
I bought 3 PS2's before I said SCREW SONY! and stop playing my ps2 for a long time.
Then when the PS2 Slim came out I got one of those, but i didnt get it without a bestbuy 2 year warranty.I really dont trust sony and there cheaply made hardware, but I love there console and games.
I've had 3 different PS2s over the last few years the first one was stolen like after a week and the second one, lasted a good while, until 2 drops off the top of the tv sent it on a down spiral, and the one I have now has been ok no major problems, had it since about late 05 early 06
I purchased two fat versions before. First one my brother took away, the second one my girlfriend is using. At least my PS3 plays PS2 games. ^__^
My fat boy PS2 serves as my only console and primary dvd player, and has been chugging fine for years. A buddy of mine had the same problem and jury rigged a similiar solution to his PS2 when his refused to open up and say ahh.
Yes I had Problems with my Playstation 2. I got my PlayStation 2 for 2002 x-mas and it worked fine until about late 2004. I remember this like it was yesterday I first started noticing problems with it when I was Playing grand theft auto SA. I thought maybe it was my game that was broken. (the game was only about 2 weeks old at the time). So then I got a new game metal gear solid 3 snake eater I put the game in my system and it totally scratched up the brand new disk. (i was able to return the disk and said it cam like that and got a new one). Anyway I took the thing apart and was and then just said screw it and asked Santa for x-mas 2004 to get me a new PlayStation 2 slim. I ended up throwing away my old PS2. And I had 2 broken games by the time this ordeal was over.
On another note I remember getting a letter in the mail around 2005 telling me about a class action lawsuit against Sony regarding this issue. I Tried to get my $25 claim but did not have the proper paperwork to do so.
Here is a some info about the lawsuit http://video-games.elliottback.com/2005/11/11/sony-settles-ps2-lawsuit/
I don't have a PS2, but I have went through 4 gamecubes, lol. I play it alot, and eventually the laser just stops working to read the games.
My ps2 has lasted me 6 years strong. Never had a problem. Only the multitap broke after many uses and my favorite controller died, a MadCatz mini blue one. It probably took thousands of hours of work. The worst to happen to mine was that GTA:Liberty City stopped working only on my console after my friend borrowed it. Works on anyone elses.
madfigs:My original PS2 developed a pretty specific problem - the only games it had trouble playing were the older, black-backed ones. It still worked fine with new PS2 games, DVDs, CDs, PS1 games
I had the exact same problem and asked Sony about it. They said I'd have to pay for shipping, repairs and return shipping as the console was out of its warranty period. I then traded it in at one EB Games, drove across town and picked up a brand new one with the extended warranty. Sony then released the Slim version a few months later so I went to EB Games and said mine won't play certain games with the a certain disc colour on the back. At this point the price had dropped so I ended up with a PS2 Slim and a 2 year warranty because they had to match the price of the return. My slim is still alive and so is the wife's fat ps2.
