I don't think enjoying a classic game AND a modern game like COD4 has to be mutually exclusive. I'm not sure if many would pick DOOM solely over COD4, but they could enjoy both, no?

Granted, I don't play classics daily, but when I do take the time to do so, they tend to hold the same draw that they had on me way back when. Also, as you noted, not all games are 'future proofed' and this stands quite true. Not every game from my childhood is worth revisiting. However, many are.

Currently, I'm playing through Super Mario World (a good example in your article, I dont think this game could ever get old), Legend of Zelda: Link to the Past, Actraiser, and TMNT4 if I have friends over (This one is getting rereleased soon I hear). I have many others that I want to pickup and play, but as I noted above, I do the modern gaming scene too, and haven't had the time.

These games must have some draw to many as the ever popular Museum collections always sell well, and the PS3 just got it's own SEGA collection title a while back as well, which I'm enjoying too.

One can't expect all titles to be worth a playthrough 10-20 yrs later, but many are worth the attention. I guess it also depends on who looks at the title. My younger brother, only vaguely familiar with Wolf3D and DOOM, might give the games a quick glance at the recommendation of his older brother, but quickly dismiss them in favor of the Halo's and CODs, but I imagine many of those who consumed those games in their hayday can get some level of satisfaction out of them, even now. Even if that only amounts to 20 minutes of nostalgia at times....isn't that worth something too?

re: First Impressions on Madden NFL 10

"stay in the pocket when you're the QB and let your defensive linemen protect you." EPIC FAIL!

I can imagine there could be more competitions with points as prizes as a result. And I've read that some buyers wanted to give sellers a bigger tip, and this would be the best way to do that. Cheez's ideas sound like great solutions to prevent scammers from abusing it.

If there were some sort of transaction approval by Goozex then it could work. Have the transaction pending until the accounts are reviewed and deemed in good standing. After both accounts were "verified" then the transaction would be approved. Or make this a feedback threshold benefit or something. There needs to be some safeguards in place for this to actually work in a positive way.

re: Goozex.com Feature Request: Gifting Points and Tokens

I think Kenny007 pretty much nailed it. Points-transfer would be a scammer magnet. Though admittedly it wouldn't be as bad now since they don't have the 100-point signup bonus anymore.

re: Why I'll Never Play Civ IV Again

lol...at least you concede the genre isn't your cup of tea at the end there, as I saw nothing short of a possibly over aggressive AI to fault Civ IV for.

Civ IV, and the series as a whole, is a step above many other strategy games in that it requires to manage so much more than just militaristic aims. This doesn't appeal to everyone, as you've so colorfully noted. The biggest turn off of the series though would have to be the turn based structure; far too slow for many gamers. However, the depth of the game is what draws me, and players like me, to this wonderful game.

Having to think before you fight, and plan WHERE you'll fight is often more satisfying than merely mass selecting a ton of units and sending them to the other end of the map; a strategy popular in many of today's RTSs. Couple that with a deep political system (I've always liked being able to trade tech, cities, etc in negotiations), trade and even some light espionage (often neglected in today's strat games), Civ IV quickly becomes quite an appealing, if somewhat difficult, entry in the strategy realm.

I'm by no means an expert at the game; I win about as often as I lose on moderate difficulties, but I enjoy the occasional game in which I can stop to think and ponder; something to breakup the sea of mindless repetition that FPSs provide (also my #1 genre).

If you've ANY desire to see the game further, you MAY be interested in Civ Revolution; a somewhat dumbed down version of Civ. I've found it most enjoyable on my DS for portable strategy, but it is available for plenty of systems. It's be a shame to give up on such a steller genre, but like I said above, it's not for everyone.

re: Goozex.com Feature Request: Gifting Points and Tokens

I think the reason this hasn't been implemented stems towards scamming. It would allow users with multiple accounts to shift points back and forth without issue.

We had a fellow on the forums a week or so ago that wanted to use his 'brothers' account balance, which had amassed plenty of negatives, as his own, under a new shiny account. What this could do is allow a user that has abused the community to take his remaining points and jump ship to a new, pristine account for more tomfoolery.

I'm sure I'm missing the larger rationale on why it hasn't been implemented, as it's been mentioned before, but I can't help but imagine someone would find a way to abuse it. I wouldn't mind the ability myself; to send my actual younger brother (lives in another state) some points to get started on this site, but I may just buy him a gift card instead.

re: Goozex.com Feature Request: Gifting Points and Tokens

I like the idea of gifting points.

As for the problem of receiving games you really like and don't want to trade back:

I would still trade them back, and then request them again when the points have gone down a little bit. I do this with all games, even if I really like them.

re: Halo Wars Fights On While Civilization Revolution Fades Away

I think it is a bit unfair of a comparison. The Civ series is TBS (Turn based strategy) and Halo Wars an actual (RTS), making for two different gameplay experiences right there. Couple that with the fact that Civ Revolution is essentially a dumbed down version of the highly acclaimed Civ series and you don't really have a true contender to fight the HALO label.

However, I'm glad you really didn't bash the title either though. Civ Rev is a great game (I play it on the DS myself, a great portable game), but the Civ series never appealed to everyone; even other strategy game lovers. I've yet to play Halo Wars (no 360 here...is it on PC yet?), and have heard good things, but I don't think it's fair to compare it to Civ. Given the scarcity of strategy titles on consoles though, I guess they don't give you much to compare with.

Good writeup!
